‘The Coaching Habit’ is a book I wanted to read, knowing Michael even slightly. I had had lunch with Michael some time ago and more recently participated in a learning program that he led for a large business conference. During the lunch he asked one simple question that stopped me mid-sandwich and focused my mind on the right question; at the conference, his skill at blending humour with good and engaging questions made the learning ‘stick’. I expected more of the same and the book delivered!

My work is largely anchored in coaching leaders who want to become more effective in their roles. And I am both a flawed human being and at times a pretty effective coach; on the first question, my wife is the authority and for the second, it is my clients. But as a coach I am also a repeat offender in sometimes trying too hard with my clients and getting in the way of them doing their part of the work. This book seems to have been written for me!

For quite some time I have believed that you don’t develop new habits without breaking old ones. I still believe that to be true. What Michael’s book brings to me is that the power and hold of the old habit is so much stronger than I would have believed. But what is more important for me is that ‘The Coaching Habit’ provides approaches and questions that, used thoughtfully, will strengthen my ability to consistently focus on the interests and needs of my client.

Powerful and convincing insights and simple tools and questions made this a most enjoyable read. ‘The Coaching Habit’ will become an important reference to remind me of when I might be defaulting to old and unhelpful habits. Simply told in a straightforward and very engaging way, ‘The Coaching Habit’ earns a spot on my bookshelf.

First off, this book is so easy to read - I love the intelligent design that relentlessly delivers learning point after learning point on every page. So I encourage anybody who reads this book to really read this book. It's so full of wisdoms around how to get out of your way as a coach, or as a manager who coaches, and just trust the process of powerful questions and even more powerful listening. What Michael has managed to do is to boil coaching down to its simplest and most powerful form - the only seven questions you ever need to help another experience the a-ha of his / her real issue so that the right solution can appear. So take a deep breath, take your inner rescuer / fixer by the hand, step into the laziest but most effective coaching practice you will ever undertake, and slay that advice monster! This is now my no. 1 book on coaching that I recommend.

This is my first exposure to Michael Bungay Stanier and I'll be exploring more of his materials after reading this book. An easy read but full of extremely useful tools and questions. I'm just moving from a career in executive leadership to a career executive coaching and the knowledge gained here will is extremely helpful for this transition. Having said that it would have been extremely helpful in my past career as well.

Michael, you've done it again! You've brought the wisdom and the research but added the "so what" so it all has practical value. I've already started putting it to good use! I also love all the resources you mention so the learning can continue.
Great Job.

Love the practical questions, that aim to make coaching easier (and less of a burden) for supervisors and managers! Also, asking questions takes the pressure off always having to come up with the answers/solutions.

I love this book. Engaging writing, deeply researched, innovative layout, and concise, actionable content. You can start using this book right away. On par with Seth and Lencioni - this is the book that will change the "How to Manage" conversation. Must read - several times.

Great book. Insanely practical and concise. This will change the way you lead and engage with your team. Not only are the questions a helpful starting point for any coaching conversation, it'll shift your mindset to be more curious about others. Equipped with these questions, I am more excited about 1-on-1 conversations because it's an opportunity to create better dialogue and pull more ideas and potential out of my colleagues and friends.
