HASH(0xa5db0dec) out of 5 stars A Serious Pocket Folder Jan. 10 2008

Coming from a CRKT M16-13T, I can tell you that the Cold Steel Recon 1 is simply on another level. The handle is big, well-formed, and unbelievably grippy against skin. The blade is strong, deep-bellied, double ground (as opposed to chisel-ground) and SHARP.

I still give the knife 5 stars, but there are a few things to watch out for:

The pocket clip is strong, so strong in fact that you're going to have to give the knife a yank to get it out of your pocket. And my jeans are already getting pretty upset.

The teflon coating won't look pretty for long. It scratches and stains. But knives like this are made to be used, not ogled.

The thumb stud works brilliantly with your thumb. But there's a notion around that this knife opens up immediately when the thumb stud hits your pocket liner. This hasn't been the case for me. But the knife opens easily and smoothly with either a simple thumb move or a hard flick of the wrist. And unlike lockbacks, it closes with one hand. Just watch your fingertips when you tip the blade back into the handle.

For the money, this is a serious, quality blade. I have total confidence in its durability, and the factory edge is outstanding.

HASH(0xa6356030) out of 5 stars Tough knife, excellent customer serivce Jan. 28 2009

Bought the Recon 1 Knife and abused the heck out of it. Box opener, rope cutter, every day carry, camping, hiking, etc. Because of a bit of obsessive compulsive disorder, one day I though I should tighten down the screws. I torqued way too hard on the screw that is part of the locking mechanism and snapped it off. I e-mailed Cold Steel, informing them that the damage was likely my fault. As per their instructions I sent them the knife and received a new replacement knife in the mail the next week, free of charge. Many thanks Cold Steel.

HASH(0xa6356114) out of 5 stars Best knife out there!! Aug. 10 2009

I love this knife and my mother-in-law recently purchased it for me (because she's so sweet).I used it everyday at Fort Benning, Ga in infantry training. It cuts everything you want it to cut and lasted 10 weeks of H E double hockey sticks and never went dull. This is the best knife you could buy or carry on you.

The knife is fast into action. Cut myself a few times practicing, opening-closing left and right handed. I don't need razor sharp and if this one isn't, I think it's close. I was expecting 440A steel as what was specified. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was AUS-8 which, according to knife steel FAQ "These steels will usually be stronger than the previous group [440A and peers], and more wear-resistant." The clip has not yet begun to chew up my pockets. But compared to the second one that I just bought, the G10 grips of the first one have sort of begun to smoothen out a little which is probably why my pockets are still OK. The curves on the clip actually fill my medium sized hands at the right places (hammer hold) and provide more grip where they are. Although I don't mind them sticking out of the pocket as much as they do, Cold Steel would do better to move the clip about .5 to .75 cm higher. Fast delivery. Excellent service.

This is an awesome knife. Cold steel made this thing to last. I've had it for 2 years now and even without sharpening it the blade is still sharp enough to cut anything. I even used it to cut wrapping paper this last Christmas. (I couldn't find the scissors). I've used it to open boxes, chop up food (meat, cheese, veggies, etc), it even makes short work of those annoying plastic packages that everything comes in. There isn't anything flimsy or low quality about it. It folds up nice and solid. I especially found the sharp tanto point useful. Unlike most knives the sharp corner bites into anything I'm trying to cut. This kife is a perfect 10. I can't find anything wrong with it.
