In other words, IF you've got it in you to simply do what she's showing you to do, you will gain great skill fast.
If you "can't" ( that means won't, btw ), then bash around however you want, & you'll still be nowhere as good as you would have been by the end of this book, 1/2 year later...

DO see in YouTube if this is the right medium for you ( look up Robin Williams Color Pencil for a stupendous photo-realistic example ),
& do see if the wax pencils are better for you than the oil pencils, before buying a full set,

There are no portraits, but there are lots of examples of realistic drawings, both from the author. A really good book for learning and exploring techniques.
