This is for people who learn by DOing, & who have the guts to work-though an exercise whose details have been decided by someone else, who's already solved & shorn-away all the wasteful/noneffective ways of learning a good progression...

In other words, IF you've got it in you to simply do what she's showing you to do, you will gain great skill fast.

Period.

If you "can't" ( that means won't, btw ), then bash around however you want, & you'll still be nowhere as good as you would have been by the end of this book, 1/2 year later...

Also get The 4th Definitive Edition of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain ( Betty Edwards )

Mastering Composition ( Ian Roberts )

and Creative Authenticity ( Ian Roberts )

and Prismacolor Mixed Media set will get you much of the way there...

DO see in YouTube if this is the right medium for you ( look up Robin Williams Color Pencil for a stupendous photo-realistic example ),
& do see if the wax pencils are better for you than the oil pencils, before buying a full set,
you will also need Odorless Mineral Spirits, "waterpen" brushes for the solvent, Stonehenge paper, etc...

This is a wonderful book. I have many books on colored pencil that I love and this is a great addition to my library. I find that I love reading books from different artists because there is always something new to learn from each one. It doesn't mean you have to follow exactly what each one does but it does open up your mind to different possibilities when working with colored pencils. She is an exceptional teacher as well as an amazing artist. I highly recommend this book.

I haven't really used coloured pencils since I was a kid, loved them, but had no idea they could produce the kind of art in this book, intrigued, I had to have a better look, this book is amazing, I bought some good coloured pencils & am going to see what I can do with them and this book and a couple of others that also intrigued me.

I had in my collection instructional books on coloured pencil by other authors but never acquired Alonya Nickelsen's book as I felt daunted by it. After reading it through the "Look Inside" feature yet again, I decided to buy it as it was so intriguing. Well,I just love it! It shows you where you can go with CP, building on skills you might already have but want to take to a higher level. It's well-written, beautifully illustrated, and most importantly for those starting out in the medium, she has many step-by-step examples of projects that you can see yourself doing well. Bonus: I had a question about outlines in the book available through her website, and she wrote me back herself within an hour or so. Got a very nice note from her, clarifying the approach to getting the download, and very encouraging to me personally. I'm being asked by Amazon to do this review before starting any of Alonya's projects, but having read the instructions, I know I'll be able to do them. Highly recommend, for the beauty of the book iteslf and the clarity of the instructions.

If you own only one book on working in colored pencil, this is the book! It contains everything that you need to know about materials, and the demonstrations are comprehensive and well done! A must have for colored pencil artists and those thinking of working in the medium.

This great book has all kinds of techniques to try and excellent discussions and charts about materials to help inform your purchasing decisions. This book was literally propped open for a couple of weeks to various pages. It almost needs to be spiral bound, as I'm not sure the binding will hold up to my demands on it. However, sturdy rubber bands are good for holding well used books together - I know this from experience, lol.
There are no portraits, but there are lots of examples of realistic drawings, both from the author. A really good book for learning and exploring techniques.

I've been through this book and find it very informative for painting with my colored pencils. I have Derwent Painting Pencils for this purpose and I do love the instructions given in this book to learn how to use them, much easier then watercolors, yet results are the same ast watercolor paints. Much easier
