Product Description

--Philippe Robert

I just saw how no-one has reviewed this lp in a year & 1/2 so I'll have my say now. Confusion Is Sex is 1 of the rawest & desperately emotional albums ever to stick in yr ear. It sounds like a band that will implode @ any second, witness the fury & rage of Shaking Hell & Confusion Is Next w/ its manifesto: I MAINTAIN THAT CHAOS IS THE FUTURE & BEYOND IT IS FREEDOM, CONFUSION IS NEXT & NEXT AFTER THAT IS THE TRUTH. For Thurston, Kim & Lee believe very much in being totally honest, to where in the late 90s Kim had lines like "I'm sorry mother, i'd rather fight than have to lie" [Little Trouble Girl] & "you hurt me w/ lies" [Female Mechanic Now On Duty]. There is a real seriousness throughout this album also mixed w/ pure energy that can be a lot of fun to thrash around to in the grooves of The World Looks Red, the distorted squeal of Inhuman & th punkest version ever of I Wanna Be Yr Dog [which follows on from a drone called Freezerburn]. The paranoia continues on the nest album Bad Moon Rising but there is a difference in that CIS sounds like all the action is taking place in a small dark room whereas BMR has wide open spaces. For a lot of people, though, CIS & Kill Yr Idols are a lot harder to swallow than the delicious Daydream Nation, Goo & Washing Machine, as there is a very abrasive quality here, but open ears will find something very special here. Equal best album of 1983 along w/ REM's beautiful masterpiece Murmur.

Yes this is poorly recorded if you are used to their more recent releases. Don't forget this was recorded on a 8-track so it's no surprise that some of the tracks end a bit suddenly or in case of Freezer/I Wanna Be Your God just one being mutated into another. Whether this was intentional now or not I have no idea but it only makes it seem more uneasy when that menacing feedback mutates into insane guitars and Kim Gordon screaming to all and anyone that will listen to her. I think the notes say it all - she really does sound unstable!
There are other highlights including Inhuman which I have to admit, I have no idea how those sounds came out of a guitar. It just sounds so surreal and frightening. Also Confusion is Next is worth a mention although it is utterly deranged as the lyrics want to wrench our tongues out from " it's ugly f**king cancer root "
I did say frightening didn't I? Well if I haven't I just have now and there really is no other word for this album. But worth it if you are serious in delving into the realms of Sonic Youth

Caution: if you have heart troubles, are in the final trimester of pregnancy, have asthma, a pacemaker, or suffer from anxiety attacks, please refrain from listening to this album. If your idea of great Sonic Youth is Goo, or even their more accessible works on Sister ("Schizophrenia", "Kotton Krown") or Daydream Nation ("Teenage Riot", anyone?), or if you have heart problems I suggest you quietly click the "back" button and find yourself some nice indie-pop, maybe Pixies if you're feeling adventurous. However, if your complaint with the canonical SY albums is that they seemed a bit genteel and droning, if your idea of great Sonic Youth is when they pull out _all_ the stops and eviscerate you with the loudest, nastiest noise they've got, then dear God have I got an album for you.
Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr. Idols is a document of the earliest form of the band, back when they were a bunch of young punks bathed in No Wave's art school nihilism. Indeed, this is the only SY album in which they sound like punks rather than EX-punks. Back then, the trio never found a noise they didn't like or a tuneful chord they didn't hate. The songs sound like temper tantrums, so dissonant and ragged that Kim's usually-grating voice fits her offerings like a glove. Taken as a whole, the album makes a perfect soundtrack for some speed-limit-shattering night drive, or perhaps a ceremony involving human sacrifice. Highlights include the morose opener "(She's in a) bad mood", Kim's brutal cover of the Stooges' "I wanna be your dog", the hilariously obtuse "Confusion is Next" ("Sonic Tooth!!! Sonic TOOTH!!!"), and the absolutely BLISTERING "Kill Yr. Idols". Hold on through the ragged production, and there's much to love in these twisted and raging tracks.

Apart from being a good room-clearer, 'Confusion' is still good ol' rock n roll. Rock n Roll that's been thru bizarre torture scenes tied to an iron rack and mutilated beyond recognition. The band never revisited this dungeon-hardcore again unfortunately, gradually heading into more subdued noodling.
I still get the urge to smash [stuff] when I put this on. Maybe thats because i stopped taking my xanax. It's amazing. Its like i never turned 15. 'Inhuman', 'Confusion is Sex', the Stooges 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' are electricity, over before you know what hit you. 'Making the Nature Scene' is a great tune about the sterilization and corporatization of city spaces, and features a cool bassline. 'Shaking Hell' 'Protect Me You'--scary stuff. Even 'Lee is Free' is perfect nonsense and a great ending (I have the old SST tape without Kill Yr Idols or Brother James, unfortunately, though both tracks rock in the same vein as 'Confusion is Next').
New fans of SY shouldn't start with this. It's one of those records you either get or you don't.
