"Fans of A Darker Shade of Magic will love its sequel, and fantasy fans who haven't yet read the first book in this series should hurry to catch up.”--Kirkus Reviews
"Full of magic, intrigue, adventure, deception, a bit of piracy...this will engage both adult and young adult fantasy readers alike.”--Booklist
Praise for A Darker Shade of Magic
"Compulsively readable...her characters make the book."--NPR
"[This has] all the hallmarks of a classic work of fantasy. Its plot is gripping. Its characters are memorable. [Its setting] is otherworldly yet believable. Schwab has given us a gem of a tale...This is a book to treasure."--Deborah Harkness, New York Times bestselling author of The All Souls trilogy
“Inventive fantasy…One for Neil Gaiman fans.”―The Guardian
Feels like a priceless object, brought from another, better world of fantasy books. Schwab's writing is engaging and vivid...kept me engrossed by its story every bit as much as I was fascinated by its complex, multilayered world. ―io9.com on A Darker Shade of Magic
London’s appeal for Schwab seems to be its changeability, the way it can shift shades, from familiar to recognizable to weird to utterly alien. But for her, even the familiar has seeds of horror in it, grime and gloom and the weight of the past…It’s a multiple split-screen adventure, with an engaging hero/heroine pair at its center. ―The Wall Street Journal on A Darker Shade of Magic
Compulsively readable…her characters make the book. Just as Kell has layers, Lila is a satisfyingly rich invention…the stakes feel higher because Schwab takes the time to make a world worth getting lost in. Darker Shade Of Magic resolves its plot thoroughly, but still feels like it could be the seed of a lengthy series. With so many worlds on the map, there's plenty left to discover. ―NPR on A Darker Shade of Magic
A Darker Shade of Magic is as twisty-turny, dark, and gorgeous as the (multiple) Londons it winds through--I loved it! ―Steven Brust, author of the New York Times bestselling Vlad series
A Darker Shade of Magic is smart, funny and sexy ... and Schwab keeps the excitement coming with roller-coaster plot twists that establish her as, perhaps, the natural successor to Diana Wynne Jones's contemporary fantasy crown. ―The Independent (UK)
About the Author
V. E. SCHWAB's first adult novel, Vicious, debuted to critical praise and reader accolades. Schwab is the author of YA novels, including the acclaimed The Near Witch, along with writing Middle Grade for Scholastic. The Independent calls Schwab "the natural successor to Diana Wynne Jones" and someone who has "an enviable, almost Gaiman-esque ability to switch between styles, genres, and tones."

Thank you Victoria Schwab for this book. It was everything.
Not enough words can express my love for the Shades of Magic series. It's my all time favourite. A Conjuring of Light was a perfect end that left no feelings unfelt. As a huge fan of the series I'm both tearing up from the beautiful conclusion and mourning that we've come to the end of this epic journey. Victoria Schwab expertly wraps up the story leaving me smiling in contentment yet lusting for more adventures with these characters. They faced unexpected betrayals, made unimaginable sacrifices and still managed to overcome the deadliest and most heartbreaking of circumstances. "After all, knowledge was a kind of power, a breed of strength." (p. 526). What they went through was no small feat. Not only did they survive, they prevailed.
I love every character in this series. Kell. Lila. Holland. Rhys. Alucard. Ms. Schwab really brings them to life. Each had so much depth. The Queen. The King. Even Osaron was more than just a villain. You will regret it if you don't meet them.
Of all the characters Holland surprised me the most. I didn't expect to get to know him. His background came in the form of a story within a story. The flashbacks of his past told all- he's never had it easy. "Life isn't made of choices, It's made of trades. Some are good, some are bad, but they all have a cost." (p. 100). His presence was crucial to the development of the overall storyline. It was bittersweet but I'm so grateful we got the chance to know him better.
I will never get over how perfect Kell and Lila are for each other. I become a little fangirl every time they were together on the pages. Thank you Victoria Schwab for satisfying my need for them. Kell Maresh and Delilah Bard is my forever OTP!
If you haven't started the Shades of Magic books then I don't know what you're waiting for. From beginning to end this series gives nothing but excellence. From the stellar world-building to the incredible characters and their growths, no words can accurately describe how amazing this journey has been. Read. This. Series. Now.
Also check out her book Visious.
First, I'm going to start with the positives. This novel started out at a much faster pace than the second novel and I really enjoyed that as it was adventure from the beginning. Also, for those not reading these books immediately one after another, I felt this book was good at reminding the reader of events that happened in the second novel (in a non-obvious subtle way). As I was someone who struggled with the second book because I remembered nothing, I felt that aspect very important.
The magic system and world building. V.E. Schwab is excellent at creating these worlds and truly delves deep with extreme detail. She really appears to leave no stone left unturned when it comes to the creation of the world and that is really shown throughout the story.
The characters are also well thought out and have depth. Throughout the story, I couldn't help but become more and more invested in each of these characters. I was going to attempt to list all of the ones that I took a particular interest to but it actually is quite a handful surprisingly.
Overall it was a very good concluding novel and series in general. However, I do have some complaints that are merely personal. The most obvious is the length of the novels, especially this finale. I thought I liked big books until I got 100 pages into this one and realized that it was going to be a struggle. And man, I DID struggle with this one. Even though there was quite a bit of action, I felt that the story could have been told in a shorter manner.
My other complaint (that isn't really a complaint and more of an opinion) is going to be extremely controversial but I'm going to say it anyway.....I don't think this series warrants the hype that it gets. *awaits hypothetical machetes to be thrown at me*. It's a good series and V.E. Schwab's world building is awesome but at the same time, I feel there are novels out there that can do it better and do not have this extreme popularity. I also feel this is necessary to point out to others, who like me, will go into this series with high expectations. Maybe lower those expectations a tad to avoid disappointment. Or you'll be happily surprised. Either way, try and ignore that hype (good luck with that).
At this moment in time, I think I will read the next novels that will be published in this world. I don't know if it's the same characters or anything except V.E. Schwab announced there would be more. Although, even though I will read them I am definitely hesitant about it and will not be rushing out to get them by any means.
