"You all know my love for Melanie Moreland's work and I absolutely loved The Contract." ---Mystical Lit Lounge

Product Description

A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways.
Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss.
Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract— fiancée instead of PA.
What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love?
Sparks.
That’s what happens.
Can the power of love really change a person?
Will they survive the contract?
What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

Set in Victoria, BC with the two main characters having a realistic, solid transformation. There's meanness, deception, cussing, using other people for personal gain. It's ugly at times.

But there's also kindness, accountability, softness, giving of genuine love. It's beautiful at times.

It reminds me of a current prodigal son play. You can't have the happy ending without the dirt, muck, and struggle that goes with it. The secondary characters are phenomenal and carry the hero's changing values from concept to reality very well.

Lovely book, imperfect people, touching story and I highly recommend for readers who enjoy a gentle contemporary tale. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

I give The Contract 5 stars for taking a tyrant and turning him into a treasure. I enjoyed watching the progressive change in Richard. I loved how Katy was able to show him how she really felt as soon as she no longer had to worry about being able to take care of Penny. But most all, watching these two grow together, fall in love and get their HEA, made my heart swell.

Melanie Moreland is an awesome writer. The story was exciting, the characters strong yet vulnerable, and the overall message about love and how it changes a person, superb!

Katy and Richard are like fire and water. One day he asks her for something she never expected. He wants her to play a new role with a personal contract, his fiancée instead of his PA. They loathe each other and now he wants her to live with him and act as though they are madly in love. Can they survive the Contract?

Katharine "Katy" Elliott is Richard's PA. She endures all he dishes out at her but can't quit nor retaliate because she needs this job. She puts up with his daily abuse and demands. She really has no choice. One day, when she least expects it, he asks her to meet with him at his home. What is he up to?

Richard VanRyan is a playboy and hard as nails at work. He doesn't care about others nor their opinions. After being passed up for partner in the firm he works at, he decides that his life needs to change. Once he formulates a plan in his head, he seeks out his PA to ask for her assistance. Will she help him get what he wants?

The Contract is a romance novel that quite literally started out as contempt for each other but changed to admiration and love for one another. This and the sequel, The Baby Clause (I read it first), show how when a person is loved, they can conquer their demons.

This is a review of The Contract by Melanie Moreland on behalf of A Book Lovers Emporium 5+ stars.
Wow, if I could have given this book a hundred stars I would have. What a marvelous book, I loved every minute and read it in one sitting, it was so good I just couldn't put it down. I knew from the synopsis I wanted to read this book, and it didn't disappoint. Wonderfully written, a fantastic story line and the characters were a dream to read - I connected to them instantly, I could see their faces in my mind they seemed so real - applause to the author for that one.
Richard VanRyan is a focused business man. Arrogant, rude, very rich and intimidating, he treats his PA Katherine Elliot despicably, he cares for no one but himself and he lets her know it everyday. Katherine on the other hand hates him but puts up with his hostility because she has personal problems that she deals with daily and she desperately needs the money. When one day an amazing lucrative opportunity presents itself to Richard, he realises he just might need Katherine more than he thinks and offers her a contract to pretend to be his fiancee instead of his PA - will she refuse, what will happen if she excepts his proposal. Sparks may fly and maybe Richard won't always get his own way.
I lived through so many emotions in this book - loathing, love, anticipation, hope, joy, tears and that warm feeling that creeps into your heart when you know you have found a great book. The author captured the ambiance between these characters perfectly and it worked so well. When I got to the end I was already missing them - I wanted more. I cannot praise this book enough, it NEEDS to be read and I can't recommend it enough and although I haven't read this author before, she has now shot to the top of my book list. A remarkable story, one that I will always remember !!!

Ooh, a complete feel good romance, a beautifully written story following arrogant a$$hole Richard VanRyan who has been passed up for promotion one too many times by his even more ruthless boss. Taking it upon himself to up and leave for his bosses rival company, and taking his non too willing PA with him under false pretences, he hatches a plan to get his career back on track. A plan that is quickly thwarted as soon as feelings come into the mix. Katharine Elliott has worked for Mr VanRyan for two years and during that time he has treated her abysmally, but she needed the job, badly, and because of that she did everything he asked of her, even resigning her job for him. Katharine is the most adorable, loving person, who even manages to bring out a better side of Richard, even when she has to tolerate his nastiness. Richard is incapable of feeling anything, until he finally begins to see Katherine for who she really is. An enemies to lovers story with a few twists. I was hooked from the first chapter to the very last word. A full five stars.
