Product Description

Review

"Kim and Theo achieve a depth to their conversation that removes the labels of victim, offender, addict, and discovers an understanding of the human condition that must be heard by criminal justice, advocacy groups, and anyone struggling to heal.”

(Dr. Don Castaldi Forensic Psychologist)

“I could not put this book down! I felt like I was enjoying a lively conversation with Theo and Kim. This book is a Canadian “Eat, Pray, Love,” complete with stories of hockey and Tim Hortons, woven together with honesty, compassion and solid science. Theo and Kim explain the complex science behind attachment theory, maternal depression, infant mental health, and brain development in a riveting storytelling style. They share information that every parent and future parent on earth should know. We all need to understand the profound negative effects of early life trauma on later life. You might discover you need this book to start your own healing. Theo and Kim have given us a gift, explaining science and helping approaches through storytelling and conversation and showing how we can grow and heal together.”

(Dr. Nicole Letourneau RN, PhD, FCAHS)

"“Conversations With a Rattlesnake” is a tour de force. With Kim Barthel’s incredible experience, vast therapeutic knowledge, and Sherlock Holmes-esque intuition, she’s able to assess, understand, and explain complex biopsychosocial dynamics in moments. For this level of personal discussion with Theo Fleury to be made public—it’s a game changer.”

(Tara Bishop Executive Director of Footholds Therapy Center)

"Kim and Theo's conversation provides the reader with a unique opportunity to see the inner workings of a therapeutic relationship. Whether you are a therapist, in therapy, or a fan of Theo’s, this book is a must-read. The vulnerability and courage shown by each author allow the reader to see the magic of a safe relationship. I am joining the conversation!”

(Eugene Hayduk Social Worker, B.S.W. R.S.W.)

""Conversations With a Rattlesnake" is a deeply touching and insightful dialogue between two genuine (authentic) human beings. As the process unfolds, each learns and receives therapeutic gifts from the other. As a therapist, I treasure the mutually honest exchange between Kim and Theo. It’s encouraging to witness them walking the walk through these important topics, but it’s also fun to watch their playfulness; never a dull moment!"

(Marie McKenzie Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist. and Neurotoxicology Researcher)

“Theo and Kim inspire us to believe that abuse is not our fault, that we can survive, and that we can teach the world how to protect children. This epidemic can be stopped.”

(Irmie Nickel, MA, BOT, OT Executive Director, Aulneau Renewal Centre)

"Theoren Fleury was a magnificent and world-class hockey player, but in witnessing his personal growth, it is an understatement to suggest that he is an even more impressive man than he ever was a hockey player. Theoren’s spiritual growth is a map and model for those who want to discover who they truly are … as people, not what the world expects them to be. The transformation is nearly complete and I couldn't be more proud of him.”

(Steve Parsons Theo’s Best Friend)

About the Author

Theo Fleury is as passionate about understanding trauma and healing as he was about being a professional hockey player in the NHL, Olympics and World Juniors. His best-selling book Playing with Fire woke up the world to the shock of his childhood trauma and the emotional pain that surrounded his every move. Now Theo’s mission has evolved: to understand himself and to take his healing experiences and translate them in a way that everyone can understand.

Kim Barthel is a world-renowned therapist and teacher on the topics of developing self-awareness, compassion and healthy relationships. As an occupational therapist, she blends intuitive inquiry with neuroscience to solve unique mental health mysteries. Kim’s broader mission is to support the conscious evolution of the human spirit. Together with her friend Theo, they firmly aim to stop the cycle of trauma and empower the cycle of healing.

This was a great read. I must say, I was a little cautious going in, as I knew a bit of Theo's story and wasn't sure how heavy it would be. This is not a sad or angry book, this is a story of amazing resilience.
As a student of social services, it was insightful to read the dialogue between Theo and Kim. The friendship that these two have forged comes through beautifully.
Thank you for sharing your story, Theo.

great book for anyone who has lived with trauma in the childhood. They talk about the clinical issues in a very clear manner. Its a healing book in my opinion and I have been a clinical counsellor for over 35 years. Wished we had this book years ago, but then again, society was not ready to hear of sexual abuse, trauma of additive homes etc. Thank god we are where we are in society healing itself. thanks for writing this book. its sorely needed. I just finished reading this book and really couldn't put it down once I started. I loved every part of it. I loved what I learned about how many things affect us starting when we are in our mothers womb, our home environment from when we are infants and etc. I appreciated how open and honest both Theo and Kim were about their own lives, struggles and issues. I really felt like I got to know them by reading this book. There was a lot to take in so I would like to read this book again. I know that I will remember and take in even more the second time. Thank you Theo and Kim for your caring and loving hearts that I know want to see people live life with freedom, purpose, joy and meaning.
