About this item

  • Preserving parts, The Liquid heated by the CPU is isolated from sensitive components using two chambers in the pump
  • Maximizing absorption, The water block, customized and packed densely with micro-fine plates, absorbs more heat from the CPU than traditional designs
  • Zoning in on heat, Liquid is funneled directly at the hottest part of the CPU and carried away quickly through technology normally used in high-end DIY models
  • Recycling the cool, Heated liquid is more efficiently cooled through a completely unique radiator fin design
  • Getting it out, Heat in the radiator fins is expelled far out of the case by the new MasterFan Pro Air Balance fan

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet bliss!
By Bill on February 26, 2017
Decided to try liquid cooling to reduce fan noise so I bought this on sale to replace a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. This is on an i7-4790k that would average 68' Celsius running Seti@Home at 100% on all 8 threads and was noisy due to dual push-pull fans that I added. The Evo is quiet enough when idle or just browsing the web without much load on the CPU and I was happy with its performance over the stock CPU cooler even when under load (stock Intel fan sounds like a small jet engine!). But I have Seti running when the computer is idle and it would get a bit noisy when the fans ramped up to keep the CPU cool.

So when this arrived I installed it right away to test it out. The large 280mm radiator is mounted in a Cooler Master HAF XB Evo in the front rad spot inside mounts, configured in pull rather than push mode. The stock front intake case fans removed to reduce dust collecting in the rad and allow full airflow pulled into the rad. Fans in silent speed mode are quiet and water pump full speed (at ~3,000 rpm pump is very quiet). At first I wasn't that impressed as the stock setting is quiet fan mode and it was a bit loud although idle temps are 1-2' cooler than the Evo air cooler at 29-30', but I bought it for performance under load with less fan noise.

And that's where the MasterLiquid 280 Pro really shines. I checked all the fan speed modes and set them at silent mode and full speed pump where it maintains a temp about 12' Celsius lower than the Evo air cooler under load even when the Evo has dual fans in push-pull. It's a lot quieter too as the rad fans and case fans are all running in silent mode. Very quiet in a quiet room and completely inaudible if the TV in the other room is on or any other noise like people talking or background tunes playing. Under load with Seti running full out and 5 other apps running including Chrome+15 tabs, and 9 plasma widgets on the second monitor (pic attached), it's keeping the CPU comfortably cool and the case is nice and quiet. I'm a happy camper!

Note - this is running in a Linux KDE Neon desktop system. The Intel i7-4790k running at stock 4.0 GHz speed, with 32GB of DDR3 1600 at 7-7-7-21 timings, ambient room temp 22' Celcius. Some kind of Intake and exhaust fans are necessary to keep RAM and chipset cool as the stock Intel cooler is designed to blow air across them to cool. The water pump does not offer this obviously as there is no fan on it, so be aware that you will need to have some airflow across the motherboard to cool it properly. Temp recordings were noted after running for nearly 2 hours and again 4 hours 42 mins at full load.Temp can be seen at 55' Celcius in the attached screenshot and the temps are very stable.

I'd recommend this to anyone who likes a quiet system and is capable of installing the radiator in their system. It was actually a lot easier than installing the Evo air cooler - very straight forward install.
