Corrupted by Fear: How the Charter was betrayed, and what Canadians can do about it Paperback – Jan. 21 2025
Purchase options and add-ons
Corrupted by Fear reviews, through the eyes of constitutional lawyer John Carpay, the evidence before courts in Charter challenges to Covid lockdowns. Carpay explains how harsh measures that turned our world upside down were not subjected to proper scrutiny. He explores crucial lessons Canadians can learn from history, particularly the collapse of democracy and human rights into fascism in Europe in the 1930s. He concludes with an action plan that Canadians can use to resist and defeat future attacks by government against our rights and freedoms.
John Carpay is the Founder and President of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. Born in the Netherlands, he grew up in British Columbia. Fluent in English, French, and Dutch, he earned his B.A. in Political Science at Laval University in Quebec City, and his LL.B. from the University of Calgary. John has devoted his legal career to defending the Charter rights and freedoms of Canadians, and has spent decades advocating for freedom in the courts of law and the court of public opinion.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 24, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIn the book's introduction, the author cites a quote about the people who buy and read non-fiction books. The following quote is attributed to the late Canadian author Eric Linkord Byfield: "Book buyers want to learn about facts and arguments that will confirm and validate their existing beliefs". Although I can't dispute that notion, it would be a shame if readers holding countering points of view on the Covid measures ignored this book. Well written with clear language, it is filled with compelling arguments against many of the policies that were implemented in Canada and elsewhere starting in early 2020.
Of particular interest are several chapters in Part 2 of the book which question the data upon which lock-downs and other measures were justified, and provide compelling evidence on how misleading data was used to generate fear. That fear was used for a massive propaganda campaign to compound that fear, while a docile media failed to question the government's narrative and how the data was manipulated.
As a lawyer working to defend the civil rights and liberties of Canadians, the book's author also delves into constitutional law and politics. Comparisons are made to similar events in history (the Spanish flu as well as the Hong Kong flu) and their impact on populations.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe title of this book is very appropriate. Since before WWII, fascism has grown outward to every country whose leaders could be bought and captured. John Carpay connects how subtly it was done up to 1945 and how the same tactics were used in Covidism. Too many controlled, fearful, people lost all critical thinking and bowed bowed to government. They didn't know history, or forgot it, or just couldn't believe it was happening all over again. Immigrants to Canada could smell it far off. They knew about the slow mind control and the horrific crimes in the countries they fled from to come to Canada. When Trudeau took our guns, it should have awakened the masses. But we submitted. Thank God the United States did not. Every household has a right to own and carry - 2nd Amendment. Sheriffs should be answerable to the people, and we should demand they do their job according to the Oath to the Constitution, that they supposedly took.
This should be a required history book because it is completely honest and in real time, and part of the curriculum in our schools. Every library should have them as well. When we remember the atrocities of past wars, we say, 'lest we forget'. We must NEVER forget what governments and their highly paid cohorts did to us in 2020. The day the shutdown was declared over a 'virus' with Trudeau's authoritative words that we would not return to normal until we have a 'vaccine', it woke me up completely. I had learned for a decade that the vaccine industry had more than 100 vaccines in the wing to push into our arms under the disguise of health. I was in mild shock for a while to see the compliance of 'bubble' cliques, complying in every way to the 6 ft. satanic rituals, mask wearing, etc. and rejecting those who would not comply, especially in families. The first part of this book helps us understand how and why this was successful.
The violation of our Charter rights and freedoms was unprecedented, calculated, and enforced 24/7 by legacy mainstream media, paid for by the taxpayers, which is a double insult and injustice. I'm so grateful for all employees at the Centre for Constitutional Freedoms who gave freely, and continue to give, to help those who were so horribly violated by our government for disobeying, not bowing down to their 'gestapo'. There are many who are still waiting for justice. The National Citizens Inquiry has many names. We should read this book every year so that we do not forget. Our children and grandchildren need to read it, or let's read it to them and help them understand what tyrannical governments look like and how they operate. Their futures depend on it. A gift to our children would be a copy of the Canadian Charter Rights and Freedoms and the Oath to the Constitution. These also should be required reading in our schools.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 17, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book shows that John Carpay has done tremendous work courageously and selflessly protecting the freedom of Canadians from government overreach and authoritarianism. It is an excellent book for showing how the government and the courts in Canada dismantled the democratic state during Covid-19 period and went down towards the path to totalitarianism akin to what happened in Germany leading up to WWII in which the judiciary was fully complicit with the state.
It is common knowledge that the legal system doesn’t work for ordinary Canadians. But with what happened in the courts from Covid-19, many Canadians have woken up to the fact the system actually operates fraudulently in certain ways against their interests and rights as Canadians.
One of Canada’s best kept hidden secrets that has now had the veil partially lifted due to Covid-19 related court cases, is how the rule of law is disregarded in the civil legal system to favour government and establishment interests against ordinary Canadians. The system is a rigged one to serve this very purpose.
One very damaging way is how the Chief Justice of each court picks the judge to hear a particular case in a completely opaque manner with zero transparency (unlike in the United Kingdom and United States). This allows them to appoint the judge based on the outcome desired and tamper with the scales of justice. Normally this is not abused – but it often is when government or establishment interests are at stake against certain groups or segments of society. Or even if a particular party is disliked or considered “lesser” by the Chief Justice or there is some other hidden agenda to be invoked – for example, with the peaceful protestors exercising their democratic rights as part of the Freedom Convoy, the system wanted to crush them and used both the civil and criminal legal systems fraudulently and weaponized against them to do so. There are only a select number of judges in each court willing to engage in Judicial Fraud when called upon, but they are the ones called upon and assigned when needed.
Another way highlighted in this book is how during Covid-19, Chief Justices (and their executive legal officers) of various courts across the country secretly met with government officials and politicians to be instructed on lockdown policies. These were serious violations of transparency. And they were serious violations for the judiciary to be free from outside influences, and to be impartial and independent.
Additionally, unlike in other western countries, there is no accountability of the judiciary (therefore this makes it much easier for the morally and ethically corrupt to willingly engage in Judicial Fraud). There is no disciplinary system (one in name only that by design is there only to cover-up and protect the offending unethical judges and not the public). There is no media scrutiny. Lawyers, law professors, the good and ethical judges, and others are afraid to speak out when they see Judicial Fraud take place. If they do, they face swift retribution and retaliation giving the message for all others to be warned off in future – this is considered completely unacceptable in other leading western democracies and does not happen there like it does here in Canada. That is just how rotten the system has become here.
This is a seminal work. It’s also a very good historical source for how during Covid-19 the courts in Canada failed to apply the Charter and protect the rights of Canadians and instead were subservient to government, against their constitutional role and duty. Thereby undermining the rule of law and serving Canadian society as required, despite being entrusted to by the people of the nation as the protectors of it.
This is an important book for Canada as it can be the impetus for other courageous lawyers with a duty to country and the people to finally speak out against the obvious wrongs in the civil legal system and help reverse the big deterioration of the rule of law in Canada that really seems to have taken place in this 21st century. We, the good people, are overwhelmingly many; they, the corrupters of the system are very very few. We only have to do our part and we will then prevail and restore the rule of law and democracy in Canada. As good citizens we must do so. The greater majority of those who make up the judiciary, the government bureaucrats, and the politicians will also be happy to see this positive change too – in fact, they should do their part too.

It gives some insight to how a system works when you aren't directly involved in it. It was a good book.
