HASH(0xa8e4be10) out of 5 stars Flawed But Worth Buying As Long As the Price Is Low. Recommend. March 27 2016
By Ann de Vries - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I'm going to give an overview of this set instead of reviewing the books individually.

I have mixed feelings about the set because the individual books were of uneven quality. Overall, some books were well edited, some not too badly and some poorly edited. Problems with the editing consisted of using the wrong word, such as writing complement instead of compliment; using a word incorrectly, as if using a thesaurus without understanding the nuances and actual meanings; some sentences that had words missing or extra words added, as if the author changed a sentence but forgot to remove words that were supposed to be deleted; and some places where spellcheck ran amok and changed words, so that the sentence didn't make sense. Based on this, there were some authors whose books I would buy and others whose books I would likely avoid.

Most of the books had anachronistic language, sensibilities and mores. Some only had a few instances, while others were riddled with them. It was particularly bad in a couple of the books, with heroines dropping the f bomb and, to paraphrase, suggesting that someone go and fornicate with himself. I am really fussy about my books set in the UK and find anachronisms to be unacceptable. I'm more forgiving of anachronisms in books set in the US, but a couple of these books really pushed the boundaries. As for the language, it doesn't bother me, not even the f bomb that gives some readers apoplexy. However, I expect it in contemporary or paranormal settings, not in historical romances. Characters in historical romances shouldn't be using a phrase about saving someone's ass; it's too modern.

Some reviewers were upset because of the explicit sex scenes, but I didn't find them to be objectionable. They were pretty mild compared to "hot" romances. In fact, most of them bored me and I skimmed over those parts.

Despite the flaws, this set was still an enjoyable read. Some plots and characters were much better than others, and the pacing in some books was better than in others; nevertheless, all were nice "fluff" and a pleasant way to pass the time. They reminded me of Harlequin-style romances that were not as well edited, but were still entertaining. I'm not sorry I bought this set and I recommend it to readers who prefer a more modern historical romance. It was a nice set for inexpensively introducing authors who were new me, and that is one of its strengths. At $0.99 for ten books, it is a bargain and many of the authors are worth exploring further.

HASH(0xa8e48450) out of 5 stars Daisy meets her soul-mate and finds true love.... Dec 8 2015

I'm working my way through this set of boxed books by several of my favorite authors. The one I just finished is Daisy, Suitors of Seattle, Book Four. I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. It was funny, heartwarming and romantic. I've read the other books in the series so this story fell naturally into the family of the Sullivans. Daisy is a Mail Order Bride that heads from Seattle to Montana to marry a rancher. Eli King has worked diligently expanding his land and now feels he needs a wife to share it with, plus one that can cook and clean. There are several humorous sections in this book and I loved it.

HASH(0xa8e4bd68) out of 5 stars Great Western Romance Novels! Oct. 26 2015

I bounced around in this anthology and have only read three stories so far - all very good! I'll post reviews on the other stories as I read them. Check back.

Laying Claim, Paty Jager, Amazon Bestselling author. Jeremy Duncan heads into the
Yukon Territory by dog team in the middle of a blizzard to keep one strong-willed, business-minded beauty alive. “A wonderful plunge into the Alaskan gold mining era.”

This is Book 1 of a trilogy. Clara Bixbee travels from Seattle to the lawless, rugged Yukon with one purpose in find her brother. Since the gold rush in the territory, Jeremy Duncan felt the best way to make a living was to hire out as a guide, get people over the passes to their destinations. Jeremy wants to do right by Clara, especially when his sister and brothers-in-law expect him to do the right, honorable thing. He agrees to accompany Clara over a treachorous pass to find her brother. What ensures is a battle of wills from two strong-minded people, fraught with danger, adventure and finally love. This is a very good story set in the wilderness. The author brings the territory and the era to life for the reader. Watching the main characters fall in love amid the beauty and peril of the Yukon made for an exciting story. This would be a 5 Star read excerpt there were a few typos, missing words. Good job to the author on plot, characters, setting and an adventurous read. 4 Stars

Sleight of Heart by Jacquie Rogers - Another adventure between a spinster and a card gambler, only this story had humor throughout. This story also has a main character searching for a lost relative, his brother. Burke O’Shaughnessy promises Lexie Campbell he'll find his younger brother, the man who comprised Lexie's younger sister. When Lexie knocks him out, Burke finds himself traveling on a train with the exasperating women and he also discovers Lexie is very good at card games due to her mathematics ability, something that can help him in his endless gambling profession. Lexie thinks he's a horrible man because of the gambling but soon finds out he does good things for people with his winnings. And she's intirgued by the card playing. This is a story of two unlikely people from different backgrounds falling in love. There are several twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages. Rogers knows how to write humor and western romance. 5 Stars

Chasing the Dead - Keta Diablo
I liked this story a lot. It had everything a reader wants in a western: Suspense, mystery, paranormal, and romance with Native American slants. The best thing about the story is a ghost bent on revenge. The ghost chases the three main characters across the rugged terrain because he's obsessed with Sacheen, the beautiful Indian maiden banned from the Apache village and now traveling with the hero, Deacon Bannister and the heroine, Madrid (Maddie). There's also Native American mythology and spiritual beliefs spread throughout. Interesting to read about what the Apache thought of dead spirits and how afraid of them they were. An exciting read that keeps you turning the pages to find out if Deacon, Sacheen and Maddie make it back to the ranch. The ghost is scary and very mean. Oh, and there's another hero who pops in, Gideon Bannister, who just happens to be very smitten with Sacheen. I hope there's another book coming with Gideon and Sacheen - hint-hint. 5 Stars
