I had to watch this movie twice in one weekend because on the first view I was so overwhelmed by the visuals I couldn't divert my eyes long enough to focus on the subtitles and I gave in to the "The Great Beauty" of it. Stunning cinematography of Rome and its most coveted views, an incredible performance by the actor (Toni Servillo) who had me caring for Jeb and his plight...

The lighting in this movie is unmatched in my experience. The chiaroscuro makes you feel as if you stepped inside a Caravaggio canvass.

Not for everyone! For those that appreciate the arts this movie is a must see. The right audience will watch this movie for years to come.

This is a piece of art in every sense of the word.

Jep Gambardella has reached his goal of being the king of night life in Rome. Guests dance with wild abandon at his parties. He prides himself on being able to turn other parties into failures. He is famous for writing a single prize-winning book, but the creative wellspring has dried up and he now makes his living writing interviews, often scathing, of celebrities. When the husband of his long-lost first love breaks the news of her death to him, Jep learns that he lost her despite her great love for him. He tries to recall beautiful memories of her, but can't. It is only after being assigned to interview a truly exceptional woman that he can begin to recover what he has lost. This colorful but slow-moving movie almost put me to sleep the first time I saw it. But by the third time, I was in rapt attention, struggling to find the possible meanings of scenes. In true Fellini style, the meaning is not just what the creators of the movie imagined. The beat of the dance and the haunting choral music entice the viewer to find a deeper meaning in his own life.

Beautiful, profound, funny and moving, La Grande Bellezza is a masterpiece. Toni Servillo is nothing short of stunning and supported by a stellar cast. Cinematography is gorgeous, and the screenplay by the Contarello / Sorrentino duo bursts with the right balance of sarcasm, nostalgia and lyricism.

The Criterion Edition hit another home run with this edition, lovely digital transfer, great extras and a booklet like only they can print.

If you get a chance, the original screenplay is also worth a read, with several deleted scenes from the final cut, and descriptions that further explain Jep's and others' backgrounds and motivations.

Love, love, love this movie. Some people praise it for the cinematography and atmosphere while condemning it for being 'indulgent' and not interesting. Yes, it has a party scene or two, a little celebrity and beautiful people but that's life. There is no flaunting and dwelling on this like you find in Hollywood movies. I say enjoy the lush filming and pay attention to the dialogue and albeit somewhat slow progress. It's a story of one's life and reflection with some colourful and very believable characters.

Sometimes its nasty when you try to take stock of your life, seeing all the useless things you did in the past that
you regret, when just having fun with friends who in turn have their own lives to live, that you
think will never end, an then it hits you, some people don’t seem to stop an think just like that commercial
I’m falling an I can’t get up doesn’t resonate with them, this is one masterpiece of realization of a man who
just turn 65, an the shock of his past come to life, all the parties he has endure in the past an then it hits him,
what have I got, this movie is so beautifully filmed that you will have to watch it twice, like one reviewer said,
because you look at the scenery of Rome before you look at the subtitles, an I caught myself doing that,
then I had to reverse it to get the words that I missed, but if anything get the Blu-Ray because if you were to get the
DVD. it would not be such a clear picture, some of these scenes are dark but I think that was intentional, because
of the night life that this man has endure in the past, maybe some people party in the day who knows what people do,
like I said this you have to see if only for your self preservation of life, I so agree with all others in their review,
but take you’re time an savor every moment, you never know when it’ll be your last, love this movie...
