Amazon.ca Product Description
The choice between speed and capacity is over. Choose both.
Traditionally, SSDs have offered powerful speeds and extra features, but at a high cost per gigabyte. Enter the Crucial MX100 SSD. Leveraging years of R&D and the latest NAND technology, the Crucial MX100 offers a low cost per GB, combined with unrelenting performance and one of the most complete feature sets available.
Micron quality - a higher level of reliability.
As a brand of Micron, one of the largest flash storage manufacturers in the world, the Crucial MX100 is backed by the same quality and innovation that has produced some of the world's most advanced memory and storage technologies. With over a thousand hours of prerelease validation testing and hundreds of SSD qualification tests, the Crucial MX100 has been thoroughly tried, tested, and proven. Make the switch to the Crucial MX100 SSD and start outlasting and outperforming your hard drive.
Feature-packed capacity. Proven reliability.
The Crucial MX100 provides plenty of cost-effective storage for your photos, music, videos, and documents - all while backing your data with a higher level of reliability than a hard drive or competing SSD. Note:1 GB = 1 billion bytes. Actual usable capacity may vary.
Run your system longer than ever before - using less power.
With Extreme Energy Efficiency technology, the Crucial MX100 is up to 89% more energy efficient than a typical hard drive.*
*Hard drive active average power use based on published specs of 1TB Western Digital Blue WD10JPVX internal hard drive. According to NPD data published February 2014, this was one of the most popular hard drives available and an accurate reflection of a common internal hard drive.
Attain consistently fast speeds without compromising the reliability of your data.
Our engineers created RAIN technology to protect your data at the component level, similar to how RAID is used with multiple hard drives. This enterprise-class technology increases the security and protection of your data to a level that's rarely available in consumer-class SSDs.
Keep your memories, photos, and files safe.
When a photo or file gets corrupted, it often becomes unusable. Prevent this from happening in the first place with the Crucial MX100 SSD, which arms every storage component with four layers of Exclusive Data Defense to guard against corrupt files.
Push your drive to the limit and avoid overheating.
Adaptive Thermal Protection technology enables the Crucial MX100 to dynamically adjust storage component activity based on how you're using the drive, allowing your system to stay cool and react to changes in use.
Do more - faster.
Get true 550 MB/s sequential reads on both compressible and incompressible data - and leave your old 177 MB/s hard drive in the dust.**
**Performance level based on comparative AS SSD benchmark ratings of 512GB Crucial MX100 SSD and 1TB Western Digital Blue 7200 RPM hard drive (WD10EZEX-00U). Actual performance levels may vary based on benchmark used and individual system configuration. Test setup: Intel DZ87KLT-75K motherboard, Intel i7-4770K 3.50GHz processor, BIOS Rev. 0446, and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit operating system using AS SSD test suite.
Save and transfer files in seconds rather than minutes.
Our exclusive Native Write Acceleration technology spreads the drive's workload across several elements, enabling you to write data in seconds rather than minutes.

This drive also really improved performance where I least expected it: virtual machines. I thought that VMs were heavily reliant on RAM more than disk speeds based on my performance monitoring of RAM and IO usage, but the virtual machine experience on my computer has gone from somewhat usable to almost-native performance. I am extremely happy.
Summary: this is the best drive you can get for the size and speed. Don't even consider the Samsung (EVO) SSDs's; while they are competitive pricewise, they don't have the same IO speeds. The Samsung Pro's match this Crucial drive (and are perhaps a bit better performance-wise), but the Pro's cost way more. The Crucial is the best value choice.
The drive sometimes goes to sleep with the laptop and fails to wake up. At this point the laptop cannot boot (if this is the boot drive) which is acary and annoying. The only way to wake it when this happens is to remove all batteries and wait for a few minutes before booting. So far the drive has always woken up eventually but I don't trust it.
I disabled all hard disk power saving features and updated the drivers. This might have helped a little, but the problem still happens. Many people on Crucial support forums have had the same issues, with no other fixes discovered.
I know that Samsung's SSD brand is considered the benchmark for the most elite SSD for Mac, but the cost relative to the Crucial MX100 per/GB makes it way better purchase in my opinion. My current computer only being 320GB, I felt with 256GB I was not missing out. Keep in mind I back up all my date via 3TB Airport Timecapsule w/ a 2TB HD attached via USB.
I like to keep my computer clean and as free of junk as possible - enabling TRIM for junk is also very helpful.
Replacing the original drive to the Crucial was simple.
-I installed the drive into my Mac (Many videos on YouTube can show you how it's done)
-I booted my Mac using a USB stick loaded with Yosemite OSX, where I did a clean instal onto the new SSD
-After installing my 4 year old mac was working as fast as new 2014 model SSD Macbook Pro's
At a 5GB Benchmark I can:

If you want to spend money on something that will truly revitalize your computer, this SSD will do the trick - at any storage capacity
The SSD was as simple as pie to physically install. I bought the 3.5 to 2.5 in adapter as well (it is required). The Acronis software is a little bit intimidating, but all the help files laid it out in a bit of a jumbled fashion. Because Windows 8.1 and ASUS had 4 hidden partitions plus the C and D partitions and because my previous C and D partitions totalled 2 Terabytes (only 90GB in use) it was necessary to manually size the partitions on the new SSD. The new partitions must be aligned on the proper byte boundaries else risk poorer performance and premature wearout of the SSD. Each partions starting point must start on a byte boundary that is evenly divisible by 4096. The performance improvement at boot is very signifigant and most all programs are invoked much more quickly. As a bit of an aside upon initial installation I was a bit dissapointed with mail startup and browser startup speed . I subsequently found that my graphics board had 3D visualization enabled and it was extracting a tremendous toll in startup speed. I do not and don't plan to use 3D visualization. I am very pleased now.
