I haven't read this book cover to cover..I'm using it as a sourcebook for an ongoing research paper..I found some unique points of view and full explanation for animal themes in entertainments as well as in painting and other visual arts..this is an important survey because it is all a part of the culture of the time.Visual evidence has a language and meaning to the people who enjoyed it.This language is better understood by this century, if we learn about the arts and symbols of previous times. It helps paint a portrait of a people. We can make educated guesses about individual and group motives, understand their needs if we decipher the symbolic language as well as any written records of other times and places.
