I replaced my old CyberPower 425VA with this new CyberPower 550VA. I was disappointed to find that the outlet sockets are oriented 90 degrees compared to the 425VA and cannot accommodate all of my power adapters. One covers the Power button and the other requires an adapter block to reorient the socket. In addition, the minimum spacing of outlets of the 425VA is 1 ½” while the 550VA has two outlets only 1 1/8” apart. Also, why have the Power button in-line with the outlets, and why have the two wide-spaced outlets together beside the Power button instead of at opposite ends where each could let the adapter overhang the box? I recognize that not all power adapters have the same orientation, but having a wide-spaced outlet at each end (and the Power button not in line) would accommodate almost all configurations. Power adapters have been with us for several decades. Is it that hard to get it right?

We live in a rural area with frequent brown outs, especially during thunderstorms. I wanted protection so that a brown out would not force my router and internet receiving antennae to restart each brown out. I also wanted one to protect my computer. I bought two more of these units because my husband has one he bought seven years ago. He has had to replace the battery once. (He took the battery out and found an identical one on Amazon.) Other than that, it has worked perfectly for him. During out recent major winter storm there were huge utility issues and many lines downed in high wind and wet snow. We had many brown outs, dozens per hour, before total power failure and then a lot of surges and brownouts as the power was slowly restored to our region. Having these units meant our router did not quit during a quick brown out or power switch. When the power died we had time to shut down in an orderly fashion, saving our work, and unlike our neighbours, no surge damage after power was restored but not reliable. We were also able to log in and quickly check email and weather reports several times after the power went out but while the local internet tower was still working. During the storm these nifty little units more than paid for themselves. Bonus they also work like a power bar.

Similar features and performance to the higher priced 'brand names'
Great for lighter uses - like your internet gear or security/surveillance.

Remember the battery is only good for a few years (average of 3 or 4 for me)
So put a birthdate sticker on them and search for a decent source for replacement batteries ($60)

After 5 years of use, the internal battery stopped working.
OK, this can happen and seems quite acceptable.

What is not acceptable is that when the battery died it FIRED THE MOTHERBOARD OF MY CONNECTED COMPUTER (a Mac Mini).

I contacted the technical support of CyberPower, quick response but no consideration.

Their answer: buy a new one!
Because, you can't EVEN CHANGE THE INTERNAL BATTERY!!

I have other UPS from this brand and that's it for me.

NO MORE CYBER POWER.

Just bought two of these due to their higher ratings and while they seem well made and were easy to set up, it's too early to tell how well they work. One thing I don't like so far is the stupid beep it makes when power goes out. Like I really need that going off in the middle of the night. I don't need to be told, that's why I bought this thing to begin with. The power goes out and my security system and computer are protected. Why do I need to be awakened to be told that?

This is perfect for my needs. It has enough battery backup time for me to save my work and shut down my computer if there's a power outage, and it bridges the gap nicely when the power just blinks off and on. You can connect it to your computer with a USB cable and monitor your UPS or change settings using the free software. All in all a good value.

It seems like when I read lot of existing reviews for this item there is plenty of disappointment. When I read what they're trying to power with these things it looks to me like expectations are way too high. These are very very small units. Even the largest one grouped on this page I would not consider to be adequate for a desktop computer. None-the-less, I confess I am confused to see this series of UPS promoted for (among other things) desktop computers and home theaters...big items with big power draws even though the largest in this series is only capable of providing a maximum of 400 watts and then only for 2 minutes (no doubt only achievable with a battery in perfect condition)! Considering I'm being asked as part of the review to rate WiFi signal be a big clue that somebody is terribly confused about what a UPS actually is and why you might want one of these in particular.

All that said, think small devices. Think chargers, security system, an emergency LED light or two, maybe an average laptop (if it's own built in battery is lacking). I bought this specifically as a backup for our FiOS ONT (optical network terminator) so that internet would continue during a power outage. That is all this one does. I have a second slightly larger unit running all my networking equipment so WiFi and network jacks stay up and the internet remains serviceable during a power outage for a reasonable length of time (not indefinitely, not for a day, even an hour might even be pushing it), but certainly long enough to coast through a typical short term outage.

And I haven't even had it a month and already it was tested earlier this week when the power went out for about 30 minutes, came back for about 10 minutes, then went off again for another 20. Internet stayed up and the kids probably never even noticed, and I was able to continue work from home on a laptop. The UPSes, all of them, operated well within ratings, performed as advertised: flawlessly.

My main use of this product is for simply, Battery backup so that I can resume my work without interruption of a power outage (even though I have a laptop, but my newly built desktop is on standby) It had a weird smell once I opened the box but its not bad, that means it was freshly packed (In my opinion). The software was great, just what I wanted. All I have plugged in is my Cisco router, and my almost completed desktop. I have lots of room in the built in outlets for future expansion of my workstation. Highly recommend this product for people with computers or if you just want general protection for your TV, Video game, etc.. This is my first time with this company. NOTE: You must charge your battery for 8 hours before use, you can use it while its charging but I wouldn't recommend it. But that,s your call. Shipping was very good (even though it was raining and whoever placed the package into a plastic bag didn't tie it properly.. but it is in working condition and it didn't get soaked.)

Update: 8/18/13

I went away for vacation for a week and when I came back, My computer wont turn on, I checked and noticed the ups was off and I left the ups running for a whole week when I was gone. I tried turning it back on and it wont. I called Cyber-power tech support and followed the steps he told me. I pressed and held the power button for 5 seconds as he requested and it still did not turn on. So he sent me a email and I have to provide the information and the invoice for the return shipping label free of charge and when they received it, they will send me a new one at no cost. 5/5 tech support right there. So now I have to use my laptop in the mean time while I wait. But I'm still wondering how and why my ups was off and why it didn't turn back on.

Update 9/10/13

After all the wait, I emailed cyberpower and they said that they were doing their biannual inventory check and all orders in and out were frozen. I didn't mind but Id wish they would have sent me a email letting me know. But hey the replacement came and I received 2 cyberpower units, which ill keep the extra one as a spare. I'm loving the replacement so far and no Issues has arisen ever since. Thank you Cyberpower! Looking forward to doing business with you in the future.
