About the Author
Robert Charles Cottrell is Professor of History and American Studies at California State University-Chico. His books include include "Izzy: A Biography of I.F. Stone" and "Roger Nash Baldwin and the American Civil Liberties Union".
James I. Matray was born and raised for most of his childhood in Evergreen Park, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. His father was a cement mason and his mother a seamstress. He attended public schools, graduating from the community high school in three years. After graduating from Lake Forest College, he enlisted in the Illinois National Guard and, following transfer, he served for ten years as a drill sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Senator George J. Mitchell served as a US Senator from 1980 to 1995, and was Senate Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995. He is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the United Nationals Peace Prize for his work as chairman of peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. Senator Mitchell is currently Chairman of DLA Piper, an international law firm.
