Product Description

Product Description

D-Day: A Layman's Guide has been written specifically for people with little or no prior knowledge of the D-Day landings and the battle for Normandy and will serve as an ideal introduction to one of the most important aspects of WW2 history.

Written in an engaging way, this is more like an informal chat than a heavy historical text, and with short, sharp chapters this Layman's Guide provides just enough detail to gain a good grounding of knowledge and understanding, without the reader drowing in a sea of detail. That said, all of the major aspects of D-Day are covered in this book, including:

The Atlantic Wall
The role of intelligence
Operation Bodyguard
Invention and Innovation
Operation Deadstick: Pegasus Bridge
The Airborne Assualt
The Merville Battery
The invasion beaches: Utah, Omaha, Juno, Gold and Sword
Pointe du Hoc
Operation PLUTO
Mulberry harbours
The end of 'The Longest Day'
Why the Germans failed to push the invasion back into the sea

For anyone looking for an entertaining and informative overview of the D-Day landings this Layman's Guide is the perfect place to start.

HASH(0x9be82f84) out of 5 stars D-Day Cliff Notes March 4 2015
By Don - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
For someone who would like to think they read about "D-Day" in 40 minutes, read the book. It is merely a summary of articles on Wikipedia and other summarizations and quotations. Reads like a high school research paper.
HASH(0x995ef810) out of 5 stars Nice bit of history May 9 2015
By Randy - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Definitely a layman's guide. Fast read, as I like it. Seems cursory, but gives you the information you need for an understanding of the times. Kind of let's you know that besides the courage, we were lucky too. Hitler lost his own war.
HASH(0x994d0804) out of 5 stars over all to Overlord is well written and factually Excellant June 28 2014

The book establishes timelines for all phases of Operation Overlord. It is an excellant guide for all the events of the day. Good source for factual information for a WWII buff.
HASH(0x994acfa8) out of 5 stars good basic summary June 9 2014

This book is just what it promised to be--a good overview of D-Day. I read it in a couple of hours and really enjoyed it. I recommend if for the overview it promised.
HASH(0x996e5dbc) out of 5 stars Great but not enough maps June 2 2014
By Guillermo Loubriel - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I recommend this but it would be better with many more maps. The book had only one map with almost no detail. One detailed map per landing site would be good.
