I'm keeping the case, because it is pretty, so very pretty, but I see a divorce in the future.
FINAL UPDATE: I returned the case and actually got a 100% refund. I am now waiting for the Vapor Pro from Element.
DRACOdesign did a great job working with me to try and find a solution to the admitted problem of GPS issues while using the Draco IV.
However, there was no resolution to the issue that the DRACOdesign team could devise.
In the end I sadly had to send back the case to DRACOdesign since when the need arises for me to use GPS in real world scenarios, the Draco IV makes that near impossible.
Shortly before I mailed back the Draco IV I discovered an old trick to fix the issue I was experiencing.
Eliminate all contact of the Draco IV and the iPhone 4 bezel.
Other companies have instituted a similar fix by inserting cushion strips or separators that overlap the edges of the case where the iPhone 4 bezel meets.
You can see a good example of this in Element Case brand Vapor Cases.
What is most surprising of this whole situation is that DRACOdesign seemingly had no clue on how to properly resolve a most serious issue in their product design.
Coincidentally, all Draco IV's are no longer available on Amazon.com (as of this writing 06/08/2011)
Hopefully a redesign is in the works to deal with the issues.
Since I wrote my review (05/22/2011) I have been in contact with DRACOdesigns through several emails.
Their customer service is very interested in resolving my issues.
I am working closely with them to try and find a solution to the GPS issues I have been experiencing.
I will update my review again with a final word on the overall outcome of my interactions with the Draco IV and DRACOdesigns.
First things first, the Draco IV should be the Deff Cleave which originated in Japan, but I have a hard time believing that.
From my early interactions with the Draco IV, the only thing about it that is related to the Deff Cleave is the design.
This is apparent when you take note of the "Designed in Japan" words printed on the front of the product and the "Inspired by Deff Japan".
It wouldn't surprise me if DRACOdesign bought the design template from Deff and started manufacturing the product in Taiwan. This would explain why there are people in China selling the Draco IV on eBay.
The Draco IV is a beautiful case that maintains the slim feel and beauty of the iPhone 4 design.
Celular signal quality was not impacted at all with the model I received.
WiFi signal quality was not impacted at all with the model I received.
GPS signal quality was GREATLY IMPACTED with the model I received.
To be specific, GPS function was killed while using the Draco IV. The Google Maps app on my phone was useless if I need it to locate me or to track where I was going and Turn-by-Turn GPS apps like Tom Tom never thought I left my house.
I have contacted DRACOdesign about my issues and am awaiting a response. However, a quick browse of the other models of the Draco IV on Amazon will turn up other 3 or lower start reviews like mine.
2 out of 3 is not acceptable for a $99 case. Even if it were $49, I would still be hard pressed to give it a positive review.
What makes this so bad is that DRACOdesign thinks it is okay to sell a defective product. They are not the first company to manufacture metal cases. There are a plethora of companies selling metal cases. Element Case, a known premium iPhone 4 aluminum case manufacturer and retailer had their go at cases for the iPhone 4 and found out the hard way that design is important. The Vapor 4, Element Case's first go at aluminum cases for the iPhone 4 suffered Cell, WiFi and GPS issues. So they went back to the drawing board and made the Vapor Pro which has no issues with any signals.
Why DRACOdesign did not fully test their product, or why DRACOdesign felt it was acceptable to release a product with known issues is beyond my understanding.
Should a solution from DRACOdesign arise to fix the problems I and others are experiencing, I will be happy to update this review to reflect.
