This quite unusual 275 page book includes brief, well-written accounts of the 'daily rituals' practiced by 161 inspired and inspiring minds, from Tolstoy to Woody Allen to Dickens to Warhol to Picasso to Jane Austen to Beethoven ... Each delightful entry runs from 1 to 3 pages in length and all are remarkably well-researched. Easy to read, fun, jammed with insider anecdotes. From the jacket (and entirely accurate): "Writers, composers, painters, choreographers, playwrights, poets, philosophers, sculptors, filmmakers and scientists on how they create (and avoid creating) their creations." The book is a joy. Dip into it anywhere, for however long. I happen to be a bibliomaniac and this is my find of the year. ... It's physically small, therefore easy to carry also.

The content is very interesting but due to the repetitiveness I would recommend reading it over a few weeks/months. That's what I did and I really enjoyed it. If I would of had to read it over a few days it would of gotten boring and repetitive in my opinion. Great work by the author to collect all this info and to put it all together really well. This book makes a great gift.

This book is (temporarily) part of my own daily ritual: I read a couple of entries over cereal to start each day. Nothing inspiring for artists but quite comforting in its revelations of the very human tics and idiosyncrasies of the individuals included. A bit misleading as a book title maybe as there are several politicians included (as writers) and very few visual artists included. The majority of the artists are those that tend to work at desks (authors and composers) with a smattering of visual artists and performers thrown in. But, still, a very enjoyable read!

The title says it all - habits, rituals, routines, meals, drinks, drugs, quirks, clothes, and must-haves of renowned artists to get through a creative day. It's like the Walden of the artistic world.

When people say they keep one specific book on hand to gift to friends, they should now be referring to this book. I am, anyway. It's an insightful read to kick off the new year, and can be read in short bursts when inspiration is required.

Loved it!

I love to be the fly on the wall and peep in other people's lives. The different rituals express very well different personalities, and no ritual is the best to accomplish one's creation. Guilt is out! The only flaw is that most extracts are rather short, where it was mostly longer extracts that were shown on amazon.

What are the daily rituals of successful artists or writers or thinkers? I know that how others work always interests me, and this book is right up the alley of those that wonder how others accomplish tasks like I do.

Daily Rituals has 161 routines of people you’ve likely heard of like Franz Kafka or Bach. The thing that stuck out to me reading the book is how much leisure many of the creatives put in their day. Now many of them may not have considered it leisure since they were out wrestling with their demons of creativity while walking the mountains, but really so many of them spent copious amounts of time walking or sitting in the pub drinking a pint or sitting in a cafe sipping on coffee watching those going by them.

It seems to me that we can learn something here.

Daily Rituals is very well researched and plain old entertaining, if light (as in none) on the ways you can apply the routines of others to your daily routine.

Still a recommended quick read in my opinion.

As an artist I really appreciated these observations and anecdotes confirming that artists truly are an eccentric sort. Fascinating and entertaining!
