Review

"A must read for those impassioned by the rally."  —CMG Online

"[I] couldn't put it down until it was done. If you have even a  passing interest in the Dakar you should take a look at this book!"  —Canadian Motorcycle Racer

"A riders' perspective unavailable anywhere else in any other form."  —Motorcycle Mojo

"If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to ride this race as a privateer, this book is for you."  —Racer X Illustrated

"When Hacking gets cerebral about what he's doing, especially at gut-wrenching moments that test his mettle—bike crashes, mechanical problems that could take him out of the rally, becoming disoriented under the Saharan sun—his writing sings."  —Winnipeg Free Press

About the Author

Lawrence Hacking is a professional motorcycle racer who specializes in enduros and rally raids, and who in 2001 became the first Canadian to finish the fabled race. His remarkable core philosophy, honed from the trials and tribulations of life, helped him survive and succeed in the unforgiving desert. This book is well written and the author Lawrence pays astute attention to detail in his travels. The mental and physical preparations for such a gruelling race were well documented for anyone considering participation in this type of event. Of course my review may be a bit bias as I've known Mr. Hacking for many years and raced against him back in the 1970's. Of course" racing against him" is just a general term as I was at the back of the pack while he lead most of the time. Lawrence's first chapters were dedicated to his early years and I found this section particularly interesting as a good number of us who grew up in the Mississauga area all raced and rode together when we were younger, so it hit very close to home with me and brought back a lot of fond memories.

I really enjoyed this book. I have other Dakar books that portray the race with factory support, an army of technicians, physiotherapists etc and unlimited $$$. That is the easy way...and mostly unrealistic for the most of us....("easy" and "Dakar" do not belong in the same sentence... but you know what I mean). This is the story of a common man who realized an uncommon accomplishment with his own wits and tenacity. Buy the book. Buy a copy as a gift to any son-daughter-niece-nephew who wants to, or is racing moto-cross. It will be an inspiration to them. It all started with a dream...and a garage...just like the garage you have beside your house.

Awesome story, there are very few books on the market where you can get the inside story from someone that has taken on the worlds most difficult Motorsport race, the Dakar or Paris-Dakar as it was called at the time. Even more getting the inside story from the first Canadian to have successfully completed the 21 day, 10 000+ kilometer ordeal.

An un-romanced, true story that takes you on a journey from Paris France through northern Africa, day-by-day racing the infamous Paris Dakar Rally. Beyond ones imagination, a must for the Adventure Motorcycle fan or race fan alike.

I met the author last year and was struck by how nice a guy he was, a down-to-earth guy with a true motorsports passion. I have also been a fan of the Paris-Dakar rally race since the early 1980s, and always wanted to compete in the event, but will never have the budget to do so.

I purchased the book recently to have with me for a trip. Had a hard time putting the book down and enjoyed every part of it. Great insight into an amazing event and a great privateer achievement. A well written book that I highly recommend.
