Prophesy is dangerous. Betrayal is painful. Brenna must survive both.

Brenna Strachan is getting ready to turn 30. For a demon, this is the time of maturing. She’ll gain all her demon powers and have eternity to learn to use them. But maturing has a drawback, for the next month, she’s mortal.

Prophesy says she’ll become one of the most powerful beings on Earth. There’s a long list of beings who fear and loathe the power that Brenna might gain and are willing to take advantage of her status as a mortal.

However, when one of her own family members is involved in plotting her death, it’s becomes about more than just survival.

I found this one just okay. The heroine is a demon who is about to go through a maturing process and some fear it will give her too much power, so her life is in danger. The world the author has built is quite interesting and has some unique aspects. Over all it is well written although I did catch some misused words, but not enough to really detract from the story. It does drag in parts where the heroine is getting a history lesson or explaining to others how magic works. If I didn't have so many books on my "to be read" shelf I might read the next but it just fell a little short for me. Other readers, especially younger ones, might enjoy it a great deal.

HASH(0x9e5dede0) out of 5 stars Great potential Aug. 8 2013

"Dark Cotillion" was one of those books that surprised me. I'd gotten it from Kindle for free on the off-chance that I might like it. The blurb sounded so, so and I figured "why not". Some surprises are really nice.

The "Dark Legacies" series introduces a world I have not met yet in my meanderings through the world of fantasy. Just when I think I have read every conceivable type of world-building something new comes along. As any type of addict my consumption of fantasy and science fiction literature is high and varied. I will try just about anything to get my fix. Imagine how fun it was to get a taste of something new and different.

What is not new about the "Dark Legacies" and specifically "Dark Cotillion" is the lengths to which some people will go in order to force the world to fit with their own visions. Assassination has been a favored tool of leaders for ages (probably for as long as humans have existed). There is nothing unusual in that. Telling lies to their followers is also a favored tool. All we have to do is look around at the fear-mongering and dehumanising projects that go on in the world. So nothing unusual there either.

After a slow start of world-building James really picks up the pace and brings us into one action-filled situation after the other. There are some gory descriptions and some sexual content but no more than most young adults encounter on a regular basis in the gaming world.

James has not quite gotten the flow right but she does present a world that I would like to get to know more about. There were moments when things fell perfectly into place and that is a quality worth building on. I found "Dark Cotillion" well worth the read and have purchased the next in line.

This was a new fun tale for me to get my teeth into. I liked the world building, and the weaving of legendary creatures into a new 'truth' - although I have to say it is VERY hard to imagine a heroine who is average height and 340lbs. My brain had an issue with imagining that, as Brenna is so active and vigorous. Of course she could LOOK average but weight a ton. Don't get me wrong, I really liked that she wasn't a wimpy wisp of a girl-demon, and I liked the explanation as to WHY she was that heavy, and I like a tale that has characters in it that aren't cardboard Hollywood cutouts. The narrative between characters is especially well done, it came over as natural and not stilted.
There is an editing issue in this book though, which I understand is not present in the subsequent books (I'm about to start on the 2nd one so I'll let you know) but despite that I found it entertaining.

HASH(0x9e5dec24) out of 5 stars A Dresser that spits out clothes that you should wear, Where can I get ONE !!! Nov. 8 2014

Now the difficult part is telling you why I love the book without telling you all the spoilers.. not easy. When you picture all the mythical Characters you just have to throw out all the stuff you think you know and start over from scratch, who would think that Lucifer fights side by side with Angels, Gargoyles, Vampires and Lycans are the good guys ! I fell in love with Brenna the central character, She is Lucifer's daughter, half demon half witch. She as a small child bound 4 of the major Overlords, an Angel, Vampire, Lycan and Gargoyle to her..they are her playmates, extended family and advisers thru her life. So now that she is 'Maturing' as a demon, here comes the sex talks. Which leave you laughing until you have to wipe your eyes and withstand strange looks, why ?? what would you do when she says "because I was raised Catholic". The book is Erotic, nicely done and not in your face tasteless Porn. She is a Demon going thru the change of demonling to full fledged demon and must be Mortal for a month going thru this change over. Lions, tigers and bears Oh My.. Nothing quite so mundane. She is more Minotaurs, Cerberus and Harpies Oh Well.. Her 4 Overlords as her knights or guardians, try telling her what immortality will bring, hence the sex lecture that leaves you laughing. This book had me laughing out loud at a Dr's office waiting room and blushing when everyone stared, and not being able to tell them it was just another little twist and turn, of which are many that leave you laughing, giggling & cheering that the adversaries she faces, she manages to slip past by the hair of her chinny chin chin.. There are just plain something she shouldn't have been able to do, but then there seems to be a lot of she shouldn't be able to do but does effortlessly. The book was so entertaining I have bought all of the series because it just hooks you, reels you in and you can't get your mind out of this little alternate reality because you just have to know what NEXT..You will laugh, get angry at the betrayals, and royally pissed at the villain all the while wanting to be able to join in on the fun..I finished it took a short nap and am now into book two Dark Illumination. Oh and I forgot there are old Prophesies that tell Villains to cheat and get her killed, which she turns her would be assassins into friends, and the heartbreak that the new prophet is her youngest brother and may die once he tells the prophesy. You will enjoy this book for the rich characters, the slightly wacky way history and theology as we know it are vastly different in her world. The simple fact that her bedroom dresser has a soul of a gay male determined to dress her properly alone is a belly laugh.. Then the bloody fight to the death with the villain just as life on earth hangs in the balance, well you see my point. This is a stand alone story you could read just this and walk away, but then you'd have to be the type to do that with a potato chip too and I think you'll be reaching for another real soon. I know I am !!

I love reading books about the supernatural. This book was a refreshing change of pace. I found it an easy read. I liked that the author made most of the supernaturals good not evil. I also love when there is a lot of humor in the story. It was amusing to see that supernatural parents could have some of the same problems with their kids as we do. I hope there will be a book 2
