Product Description

Maria Peterson leads an experimental new fleet of battleships and arks carrying millions of Alliance refugees out of the Colonized Sphere. Days later they exit fold space to seek refuge with their new allies: the Ferine. She arrives in time to use the lethal capabilities of the battleships to defeat the Nevargh fleet which was ready to annex the Ferine's home world of Cartise. The victory is bittersweet though as our heroes have been forced to flee from an Earth levelled by war and have left so many friends behind who are surely going to be hunted down by MERA.

Millions of human refugees are beginning to adjust to their new lives on Cartise and other Ferine colonies when a high ranking Ferine elite politician is murdered. Soon more incidents of death and mayhem force Maria to investigate. She comes to the conclusion that a MERA operative has come along for the journey to Ferine space. This assassin has orders to destroy her new alliance with the Ferine and leave them vulnerable to the Nevargh Empire.

It becomes a race against time as Maria must ferret out the operative and assemble reinforcements before the Nevargh Empire gathers a new fleet to overwhelm her forces.

This is a great follow-up to The Phoenix Project. The book takes off really quickly, and the motion rarely pauses. If you like Space Opera, you'll probably like this!

HASH(0x992dacc0) out of 5 stars An Excellant and Exciting Sequel Feb. 17 2015
By Catherine Mackay - Published on Amazon.com

An excellant sequel that picks up the story from where the first ended. The author has improved on the first book - great action, some fun and interesting characters, dialogue between the characters is significantly better (the previous book sometimes tended be almost script-like), the universe that Powers has created is a lot more fleshed out, there is a nice interweaving of humour in the story, vivid description and very few proof-reading errors. This is an exciting book that has some great battle action and weaves the difficulties of first contact with another alien species and the effects of cultural differences into the story. There is mystery, murder, action and adventure within the pages of this book - a wonderful read from an improving writer.

Enjoyed the fast paced, exciting story. Excellent characters and great believable interaction between characters make it a real page turner. A must read continuation from the first book in the series.

I read about 90 pages and quit. The number of absurdities in this book is just too much for me, author cuts corners to the extent I never thought possible. A human kills an alien diplomat on a planet where 8 murders happened in a hundred years - well, we need to find the perpetrator but other than that life goes on, it has practically zero impact on political and social life, on mutual relations. Humans brought several million people but unfortunately no police.
300 planets are occupied by the evil Empire, but there's resistance. Resistance cells don't contact each other, they aren't even sure other groups exist. The leader of one resistance cell which apparently consists of 2 guards, a bunker and a leader himself finds the notion of joining forces with other cells new and interesting.
There's an assassination attempt on the only human Admiral. Someone tries to shoot her in her quarters on the ship in space. No one thinks it would be a good idea to lock the ship down to find the assassin.
Maybe it gets better later, but I don't want to waste my time checking.

Edit:
I thought I was too hasty so I went back and read another 40 pages but then they pinned down the location where transmission was received (!) after finding some random code on random internet site.
The sad thing is the writing is quite good.
