5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this! Aug. 16 2014

This is a new author for me and I have to tell you that I absolutely loved this story. I have the next two books I am anxious to get to them.
This is a great paranormal mix of creatures. You have the Mystics who are the strongest and the cruelest (part vamp part shape shifter witches) , and then you have the Dylia (shape shifting wolves) which we dont see much of in this book, and the Hyjia (human -cat hybrids).
Then enter the hunters who have formed this elusive group, the Mooyers and have deemed any non human creature to be called The Tarnished. With me so far? Ok....this author did a phenomenal job of taking you back and forth in everyones perspective without jumbling it all up.
Our story starts out with two young Mystics, James and Kain, who unknowingly form a bond that will keep them together. Arghhh! I do not want to give away any of the good parts of this book because it is all so good! So this is what I have to say, if you are a paranormal lover, read this book! You will not be disappointed!
4.0 out of 5 stars A story about passion's many forms... must read! Oct. 1 2014
By Carly Rose (Carly's Book Reviews) - Published on Amazon.com

Set in a brutal society that rears its children with a legacy of pain and destruction, A PREQUEL tells the frightening tale of what can happen when passion turns into obsession and love gives birth to hate.

Set in an interesting world where human and paranormal elements both thrive; the concept is unique, intricately developed, and at times disturbing. First in a series, this is not a stand-alone story, and has a cliffhanger ending that is meant to leave readers wanting more. While the overall quality of writing is good, I did note numerous editing errors that were distracting at times, but did not significantly detract my attention from the plot development.

While containing several story elements that may be disturbing to some readers, including incest, physical abuse, torture and rape, this a complex and slightly disturbing story that grabbed my attention and kept me fully engaged. I will be reading more of Johnson's series in the future... I have to find out how it ends!

3.0 out of 5 stars Character backgrounds Feb. 1 2015

***3.5 stars***

I read the series out of order. I began with Dark Indiscretions and then backtracked to Prequel. I really don't think you have to read the series in order but it will help in order to obtain a complete understanding of characters, their beginnings, and the whys to their behaviors. The two dominant themes I recognized were obsession and revenge.

Prequel for me was a bit slow and took a lot for me to become invested in the read. I'm glad I stuck with it though. I appreciated reading James's twisted obsession with Jennifer, the prophecy, and how it all got started was well worth 3 stars alone. The history of Kain in relation to James was interesting too. A little side note.... I found myself irritated with James a lot in this read. He wanted to be treated like an adult but more often was seen having tantrums.

Don't think because Prequel is a background of the characters in the DI series it does not have all the taboo issues Shakuita Johnson fans and the DI series have come to expect and love. It's all there. This is just the beginning. Personally, I found the history on James and the humans especially interesting. Is Prequel essential to read in order to follow the series? No. But, like I said earlier to have a better awareness of characters it's worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Positively good. May 15 2015

I had put off reading the first book in this series so I read this one and was a bit confused but I figured it out. This was also my real read in the m/m field and although a bit uncomfortable, I found the story to be well written with good descriptions of most characters but there were a lot of them. I hope in future books more of those are fleshed out.

As for the story, it revolves around the beginnings of James and Kain and the paranormal land they live in. It also explores the families, the interactions of it's members, battles of wit and of might, and of course love, lust, and sex.

I liked this book and would recommend this to paranormal fans and others who enjoy a good love/hate story. And I must give this book 5 stars because the writer did a damn fine job in writing. I hope she continues to grow and succeed.

Dark Indiscretions was a good read. I enjoyed watching the friendship/love between James and Kain; James was definitely a handful and his actions to things will make you smile. Kain was the gentle and understanding one, making you love him more. The relationship between the men and women in this book was very different from what I usually read but the thing that took me by surprise in this paranormal, was that brothers and sisters were married and bonded to each other to keep their blood pure. This was definitely a first for me. I enjoyed the story but the fact that brothers and sisters were married and having children was a no-go for me. James becomes obsessive with Jennifer and I enjoyed the way this short read ended. The suspense makes me want to read the next book to see what happens with James and Kain and I will try to continue the series, however, if more incest happens in the next book then it will become a done deal for me.
