This is the latest addition to my Enya collection; I wonder why some people didn't like this album. I'm a big fan of Enya (Vangelis, JM Jarre too); when I'm buying an Enya album, I expect Enya, and this album delivers like the rest of her previous work. I'm glad her style hasn't changed through time (since her legendary "Watermark", unlike some rock bands for example who often try to "adapt" to follow the trends by changing their sound with each album, and by doing so lose their true essence (U2, Madonna, come to mind *cough*). I enjoyed this album with its haunting melodies and unchanging Enya spirit. Meditative, rhythmic, melancolic, magical, harmonious, Enya reflects her beauty through her music. What I also appreciate is the release timing, just around Christmas. This is reminiscent of "The Memory of Trees" (1995) "A Day Without Rain" (2000), "Amarantine" (2005), which all came out just before Christmas too, and that always bring back good memories of those periods.

Curiously, I have read some negative reviews of this latest release from Enya. I can't figure out what the complaints are based on: this album is quintessentially Enya. There's no way anyone even vaguely familiar with her work would hear this and not know who created it. Each track sounds enya-ish. As you would expect, there is heavy layering of sounds, coupled with her vocals. The engineering is solid, and listening through I am reminded of track on other albums. As usual, there are a few that stand out, but overall I was very pleased with this latest album.

CONTENT:

“Dark Sky Island” (Deluxe Edition) by Enya, her eighth studio album, released by Warner Music (UK) in November 2015, contains 11 songs in the regular set, plus 3 bonus tracks. I have compiled a song listing (plus personal comments):

01 THE HUMMING*infectious and magical; muses on the cycle of the universe and how change affects everything; refers to the sound of the early universe which is at around 47 octaves below the lowest piano key.
02 SO I COULD FIND MY WAY*sentimental waltz, in the key of D major; Enya described the melody as 'very emotional', dedicating to her producer and friend Nicky Ryan's mother Mona who died years ago.
03 EVEN IN THE SHADOWS*a one-off guest appearance courtesy of Irish rock and jazz musician Eddie Lee, who contributes to the tracks "pulsing, insistent rhythm" with double bass; a strong future single.
04 THE FORGE OF THE ANGELS
05 ECHOES IN RAIN*first single; has a "buoyant optimism" and the lavish vocal work somewhat reminiscent of "Orinoco Flow"; Enya's vocals span 2 octaves from the low note of B2 to the high note of E5. The lyrics describe the feelings of a long journey home, travelling through night and through day, with the verses detailing how the surroundings and emotions change throughout the journey.
06 I COULD NEVER SAY GOODBYE*a classic Irish lament Enya has become well known for, with "a sparse, hymnal arrangement".
07 DARK SKY ISLAND
08 SANCTA MARIA*a blending of synthesisers and classical instrumentation, to go with the melody that gathers both new and old styles together.
09 ASTRA ET LUNA
10 THE LOXIAN GATES*created by the trio's lyricist Roma Ryan, focusing on the "intergalactic theme" and otherworldly and futuristic tales.

I just purchased this CD and have to say I'm disappointed. I read some of the reviews before I made my purchase hoping they were wrong, but unfortunately no. There are a few songs that are passable, but overall the songs sound very much the same and the lyrics are poor. I think she needs to revisit some of her old material like Orinoco Flow, and the Celts and other songs that made her popular, songs that had some life to them. Like some people have said, I'm beginning to wonder if her best days are behind her. I will think long and hard before I buy any more of her CDs.

Enya's music has the ability to grab my soul by the scruff of the neck and drag it to a better place. This album is no exception. Probably my favorite since Shepherd Moons although they're all great.

If you know what Enya sounds like then you know what this album sounds like. Every single track just sounds really Enya-ish. Nothing special, nothing new, it's all just more Enya music.
