Guy Gavriel Kay's prose is so beautifully structured and poetic, it is heartbreaking at times. The Darkest Road finishes the Fionavar Tapestry, a beautiful trilogy that I have enjoyed for years. I know this trilogy is a rehash of many other time-honoured stories (King Arthur, the Bible, Tokien, etc.), but Kay manages to tell it afresh through the eyes of the newcomers to Fionavar. I loved the idea of the Weaver and I loved that those with powers used restraint (well, the good guys did, at any rate) and didn't rely on them to solve all problems. All magic comes with a price. Of all of Kay's books, I enjoy these three the most.

A brilliant author, but earlier in his career, and not as polished as his later works

I have finished Fionavar, and unfortunately GGK's chance at having a perfect all 5 star run comes to and end.

I do think GGK has noticeably improved as a writer since the Summer Tree, and the dialogue and prose is better, and close to how amazing it is in Tigana. Seriously his ability to make uncomplicated language beautiful in this book is amazing.

There are a couple reasons I enjoyed this less.

1. It leans in to Arthurian legends to an extent that I do not prefer. It felt like my lacking knowledge of those legends hindered my enjoyment of this book.

2. It expands the cast of characters a lot from The Summer Tree, and I feel like for a not super long trilogy it just didn't have the pages to do that justice.

3. It had some romances that just kinda.....remind me of Wheel of Time romances. Those things do be coming out of nowhere.

I still continue to mostly love it, very few people can hit tragic and inspiring to the same degree as GGK.

Also I love how this world is mostly soft magic, and the tiny bits of hard magic tend to have incredibly clever payoffs.

He is fantastic and balancing that with the pure wonder of soft magic.

I would recommend this series to any fans of Arthurian Legends, classic fantasy, or massive GGK fans.

If you aren't all those things, I would highly recommend reading his non Fionavar works first

Finally some pay off.

This is the best book of the three and was worth wading through the first two to get here. If you have read my reviews of the first two books you can tell that they bored and confused me to no end, but i still found them enjoyable. Looking back now i can say this is probably one of the best book series i will ever read. The author took alot of chances with the final book killing off characters that you wouldn't expect to die. Coming to good conclusions and tying up most of the characters stories neatly. The poetic prose seemed easier to understand and all the action made everything flow alot better. There is several amazing battles during this book two in particular that are just awesome. In the end i would say this trilogy is worth your time even though it will take up alot of it.

A Beautiful Story in a Beautiful Setting

I love the Fionavar Tapestry. In these books Kay has woven a beautiful, complex story. The setting is Fionavar, a gorgeous and enchanted world filled with magic and history--a world which reminds me of Narnia or Middle Earth. The story is filled with strong, compelling characters, both male and female, who sometimes have to make difficult choices. At times the story is sad but Kay's writing is so graceful that I enjoyed even the sad parts.
The Longest Road, the last book in the trilogy, was for the me the most emotional and heartbreaking. I cried many times before reaching the end, but Kay's story is never bitter, only bittersweet. And within it there also lies true joy for some characters. The closing chapters of this story are magnificent in scope and feeling, and when I turned the last page I felt satisfied.
I would highly recommend The Fionavar Tapestry to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy with powerful magic and attractive settings.

So stunningly written and the parallel stories do NOT leave you confused as to where you are and whom you are following in the main. Stunningly descriptive you feel every emotion of each character. So many surprising twists and turns that despite constant re-reading (yes they are that good) this trilogy of books offer a deeper insight into the characters each time. Despite knowing what is coming in the books from the rereading I still find them heart racingly good. As I get older I find myself identifying with a different character each read (hence the need for the electronic version than my well worn paperbacks, allowing me to enlarge the text!)
