Robert Wise did more in 1951 with what he had to work with than Scott Derrickson had in 2008, which goes to show you that special effects alone do not make a film. Although it gets off to a promising start and the special effects are excellent, after the first half hour of the film it is strictly downhill.
The storyline is simple. Klaatu, an extraterrestrial, comes to Earth with his assistant on a mission. It appears that Earthlings have been observed by a superior species and found wanting. In the original 1951 film, the mission was clear. Klaatu lets the earthlings know that they need to clean up their act or they will be destroyed. In the 2008 remake, Klaatu's message is that he has actually come to destroy Earthlings, because we have been found wanting.
Jennifer Connelly, in the role of Dr. Helen Bensen, a supposed top-notch scientist, gets all weepy with Klaatu, begging for another chance. Moreover, the constant interjection of the cute kid, played by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett's son, is really annoying and adds very little to this muddle of a film. It probably would have been a better film, if the whole subplot involving this child were removed, as it only weakened the film with all its sentimental claptrap.
Meanwhile, Klaatu is left to ponder that age old question: just what is an Alien to do when confronted by a beautiful Earthling whose beautiful eyes well up with tears every time the Alien mentions killing off all of humanity?Read more ›
The effects of course are up to date, but the story is lame. The robot is huge and great, but is never contacted by the women with a flashlight, and just becomes lamer. He stops the world all by himself at the beginning, but is stopped himself by the alien, and is kidnapped later by the government!
The alien never goes to a boarding house to pal around with the boy.
The ending is real buggy!
Not a re-make at all, really a different movie with a familiar name.
Sorry I can't recommend it, but if you never saw the original, maybe it's OK for you.
The movie was good, nice, pieces of animation, and like most U.S. movies, only the U.S. can save the world! But in fact that job was left to Klaatu whose final job is to see if humans can live as they are destroying their planet.
Klaata is captured by the authorities and all these scientist need to figure out what to do before the alien is interrogated and then dissected (the poor ambassador of peace). Klaata mind is made up, humans must be destroyed as they are destroying themselves and the planet, but a scientist, helps him in his conquest. Aliens pods, begin to remove animal and reptile life and them disappear into the heavens and a scientist sets out to dissuade him, that we are not all bad. The earth begins to be destroyed and finally, Klaata decides he will help and after all the destruction - the earth stood still.
Good apocalyptic movie.
If about this movie itself(not the message from the movie), beside the CG, I don't see any good that worth to purchase this movie. So, I will suggest that you go rent it before you purchase.
Three-disc special edition and bilingual as described by seller.
Hollywood, please leave the classics alone. You can't make 'em better with computers and Keanu Reeves.
Avoid, unless easily amused.

Not a classic for sure, it includes an old version of the movie. I like Sci-Fi movies anyway, but not the top.Published 6 months ago by tornitons
I ordered this film twice, and both times it would not play on any of my DVD players.. I still want the film along with the 19 fifties version which was in one package, but I need... Read morePublished 14 months ago by Frank Pew
