We picked up two copies and played the first one with system link. It is hard to put down that way - having a friend helping out, and both having a full screen view makes it really fun.
Riptide picks up immediately after the end of the first game - the same characters (plus one new one) are available.
They added a few new options such as throwing flares, marking things on your map for other players (we do system link on this as well), etc.
The difficulty on Riptide is significantly harder than the first Dead Island. Zombies swarm more and the fact that your character starts at Level 14 rather than Level 1 leads to tougher fights right away. I recommend playing part 1 before this game.
Don't pay more than $9.99 for Dead Island or Dead Island Riptide. Gamestop currently has them for that or less in store.
If you can do system link, it makes the game so much more fun.
Lots of customization of weapons and abilities makes this a must play.
Can't recommend enough!
It does have quite a bit of language, so the rated M is very much true!
Hi I played this game all the way through about three times. It is scary and do like the creepy music, however I tried to play it again yesterday and now if something explodes, it freezes. I turned off the xbox, cleaned the cd and tried again, no luck same thing!! I don't know why this is happening it's so frustrating. I have never played online, just solo. I have read where other gamers are having the same issues but most are playing online or coop.
I also read there is a patch available but I have no idea how to use it or if this only pertains to online. Overall I would give this game three stars and it is alot of fun. I also like the side quests, i just wish they would fix the bugs that cause the freezing before releasing dead island 3. My advice rent it first to see if you like before buying the game. Be warned if you do buy the game it may be fine at first, then it starts freezing... Hope this helps...:)
For those unfamiliar with the previous title this is a melee heavy zombie apocalypse. With a heavy focus on loot, crafting, and online cooperative play. All of that can make it quite entertaining. Unfortunately it has a rather bleak half life to all that fun. The control scheme does its level best to dumb the experience down, and even to go so far as to frustrate players. It is really a shame, because the developer saw fit this time around to take off limits on consumables, and brought a greater range of tools into play.
It almost comes across as a taunt. The act of changing weapons isn't just inconvenient. It is usually a death sentence. It is like having a chest full of toys, but only being allowed to play with one toy at a time. Which means that while your in game character might have a ready supply of throwing weapons, mines, and projectile weapons. You will almost never use them, because the preparation time for using them is rarely there. It might work in a cooperative game, but it definitely doesn't work playing solo.
In fact the games new elements are actually at odds with cooperative play. One of the beautiful things about the original game. Was the fact that players could scatter shot a map. Each tackling different objectives, and coming together when something tough presented itself. The heavy instancing in this new game makes that really hard to pull off. The game literally beats you over the head with all of the instances it wants to throw at the player.
That all said, and it is a major drawback. The new game has brought a lot of positives to the franchise. The game world is much larger, and the environment injects more then cosmetic obstacles. There is a better assortment of weapons. There is more in the way of missions. The artificial intelligence has seen some positive tweaking, and finally it is a far more polished product then the first. There just aren't a lot of game breaking bugs.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who didn't play the first game. There is a good thirty to forty hours here as long as you don't rush, and take the time to explore, and do the side quests. For anyone who played the previous this game may be a repetition too far. Unless you couldn't get enough of the original, or it never started to wear on you. This is really the same old game done over in a new setting. The developer didn't even bother to change up the skill trees.
Game play is good and the game goes on forever so it’s not a one day game.
A lot of good weapons to use and build up
Graphics are good
Lots of Characters to play as
Maps are good and the fast travel saves you from going over the same areas all the time and getting bored.
More enemies than the last game
It is an auto save game so you can’t stop playing unless you get the save signal or you risk losing game progress and sometimes it puts you on another spot on the island.
Every once in a while I get killed by almost nothing, a few cheap shots by lesser zombies. A few times I never even saw what killed me
Furry skill is hard to activate
Over all it is fun to play and hard to put down and I would recommend getting it. If you never played Dead Island you might want to play it first and save some Money but in time the game price would not be a factor. I will come back when I finish the game and finish the review but I will not give spoilers.
The weapons are pretty much the same, the scenery is identical sans the resort, and the story is even less engaging than the original. The missions ARE THE SAME! " Go get medicine, get me drugs, water, pills" etc..
Heck, they didn't even write a new song for this game.
Ok, so there is one new playable character..big whoop.
Yes, the gameplay is fun..it's really great melee action!
Sadly the co-op is less fun than DI. So many lags, and glitches... For instance, if you and co-op partners are doing separate missions the game will lag uncontrollably, and you may find yourself being overrun after a lengthy lag.
Also, there is a huge problem with players using grenades to purposely team kill. Kind of a drag that the devs made that possible.
So,...if you are a Dead Island fan, rent it.
Or just play Dead Island and save a few bucks.
Thanks for reading.
