This is the third in Lin Anderson’s series of books featuring forensic scientist Rhona MacLeod. I admit to being slightly disappointed in the previous book in the series and hoped when I started reading this book that it would recapture the vitality and vigour that was present in the first series book. I was not disappointed.

A human limb is washed up on the shores of Skye and sent to Rhona’s lab in Glasgow for analysis. It is a fairly straightforward investigation but whilst Rhona is attending an international conference in Los Angeles the Ministry of Defence step in and remove the limb and all other relevant evidence. Rhona is not impressed by this action.

A young couple is on the run with a baby. Wanted by the drugs squad they head for Skye which for one of them is the source of memories they would rather not confront. Meanwhile Rhona’s boyfriend is held for alleged drug selling and as a consequence Rhona is suspended from her job. After the MOD intrusion this is something Rhona does not take kindly too and she heads for Skye ostensibly for rest and recreation but in reality she wants to pursue further her investigation into the mysterious limb.

Naturally all things come together in a tale of national security, drug smuggling and murder. Set against the rugged background of Skye it incorporates fully the features of the terrain making it as much part of the story as anything else. I really enjoyed this book and it restored significantly my waning interest after the disappointment of the previous book.

This is the third out of a series of books in which forensic pathologist Dr Rhona Macleod is the main character. Don't worry if you haven't read the previous books - yes of course you would have a slightly more in-depth insight into the characters if you had read them but it certainly won't spoil your enjoyment if you try this one first.

The story starts off with a severed foot being discovered in the Scottish waters. Initially it is assumed that it belongs to a fisherman lost in a boating accident. Rhona isn't so sure and starts to delve deeper but her investigation is quickly blocked by the MoD and all evidence related to the investigation mysteriously disappears. However, in a relatively short space of time more body parts are found and Rhona is convinced that something is seriously amiss.

Running as what seems to be a parallel story are the characters of Esther and Spike whose paths cross Rhona's when her boyfriend gives them a place to stay in her absence. Initially they seem to be a small part of the book but their involvement grows until Spike becomes an integral part of the plot and its conclusion.

This is a well written book, exactly what I have come to expect after reading Andersons' previous two books and it certainly didn't disappoint. It was one of those books where I just had to keep picking it up to read a bit more and find out what was going to happen next. The few times I thought I could predict the next twist I was wrong, and the conclusion is certainly not one I saw coming.

If I were to have a small criticism of this book it is that Rhona always seems to be in the right place at the right time and just happens to meet the people who are integral to the story - but as long as you take this book for what it is and don't worry about how true to life it is then you are in for a good read.

This was one of 3 books ordered together and this one and Torch were in poor condition which was not noticeable until part way through.
Deadly Code had many loose pages which were on verge of falling out.
Very disappointed with the books condition but story was good.
Would have returned the books but had already read part way before discovering problems.
