Product Description

French composer Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) was among the most important of all French composers and a central figure in European music at the turn of the last century. Noted for its sensory component and for rarely forming around one key or pitch, Debussy's music often reflects the activities and turbulence in his life and virtually defines the transition from late-Romantic to 20th - century modernist music. The Claude Debussy Collection, a specially priced, limited-edition 18 CD box set is truly a treasure trove for all who would like to hear more of the composer's famous works. Included are such popular orchestral pieces such as La Mer, Nocturnes, Prelude a l'apresmidi d'un faune, Images, followed by ballets such as Jeux and La Boite a joujoux in legendary interpretations by Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez and Charles Munch. The chamber music collections feature stellar interpretations from James Galway, Lynn Harrell,Steven Isserlis, James Levine, Andre Previn, Jean - Pierre Rampal and the Tokyo String Quartet.

HASH(0xa73258ac) out of 5 stars Debussy - Sony Collection - A Grab-bag July 12 2012

I found myself enchanted by Crossley's version of the Preludes this foggy morning. Regardless, I just received this box and wanted to share the content with other potential Debussy collectors. I will return and update my impressions as I progress through the well filled 18 cds. The Preludes make me feel quite optimistic about the collection.

The packaging is quite good with a sturdy standard square box; the lid is opens like a book towards you and the 18 cds are stacked in a pile. You will need to remove them all in case you are looking for a specific cd. They look almost identical, but are nice color coded on the edges to indicate orchestral works, piano works etc. Each Cd contains the standard box image of Debussy as well as a tiny indication of content in the upper right corner. The upper left corner shows the number of the cd. The back of the sleeve shows the content, performers and time information (although no dates). The sleeve itself is a medium thickness paper (sturdy but still soft enough not to damage the cds). There is also a nice 32 page booklet (18 pages focusing on cd content [with dates] and three 4 page essays about Debussy in English, French and German). There is no discussion about the performers or the recordings in the booklet beyond the cd content.

This is not as complete as the competing box for Deutsche Grammophon, which isn't complete, either. The Munch/BSO performances are nice, if not especially rare, and it robs us of Boulez's complete Sony Debussy. The piano works are well covered, the songs are better on DG. I paid little for such a fine set, but overall the DG box shows more of the composer. Despite some unusual choices--including a bunch of music for harp, there's nothing overly surprising here.
