This was an excellent book. I haven't had the chance to pick up a book in a while, and I'm so happy I got this one. It is very well written, and has a great balance of mystery, action and romance. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is into vampire novels. A well thought out spin on your average vampire lifestyle. I cant wait to get my hands on the rest of the books! Thank you Stacy Claflin for the library starter pack, I can't wait to read the other two novels in the package!

HASH(0xa009d450) out of 5 stars A great adventuresome escape April 4 2013
By Alana's Mommy - Published on

I am not into fantasy books, nor am I into young adult literature but I had to give Deception a try. The description sounded interesting and I wanted to find out what was so different about Alexis.

Alexis is the book's protagonist. She's a teenager who- despite being intelligent and responsible- has always been treated differently than her sister by their parents. A series of strange and troubling events start occuring surrounding her and she soon finds out why. I won't tell you why- you'll have to read the book. I will tell you that you don't have to read too far to get to that point.

The character development on all characters is well done. Alexis acts very much like a real teenager acts, thinks like one thinks and talks like one talks. Her interactions with her friends (and non-friends) is believable and doesn't feel contrived. There's nothing "cookie cutter" or "predictable" about her or the people surrounding her. Reading the book, the reader believes they are watching the characters play their lives out in front of their face.

The plotline is solid. I found myself asking the book questions about plot holes (I love finding plot holes) but anything that was at first unclear or seemed like a hole became well-explained and well-developed. It wasn't a meandering book that made up rules as it went- Claflin presents the story in a believable way.

The book does end on a cliffhanger but the reader must understand that it's a series of books- not just one standalone book. In fact, most of the chapters end on cliffhangers. I like cliffhangers in books because I like to be driven crazy and unable to put a book down. I like cliffhangers that challenge my intelligence and make me wonder what's going to happen next. Claflin does this well.

I noticed that others mentioned a few spelling/grammatical errors along the way. The author has a nice note at the end of the book saying to contact her if you notice any so she can correct them for future editions. It's a lot easier to edit a book than it is to write one so throw a sista a bone and let her know what those are as you notice them. Any errors are not distracting, nor do they make the content of the book unclear.

I would recommended this book as a good read even if you feel you're not in the target audience. I'm 30, a mom without a ton of spare time and I just don't do the whole fantasy thing but I enjoyed this book a lot. It was an easy read (but not one that's insulting to your intelligence), a great adventuresome "escape" from the real world and challenged the powers of my imagination. Give it a try- you'll be hooked, too!

HASH(0xa009da80) out of 5 stars Fun read! April 20 2013
By So many books, so little time - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Deception is a fun and fast read! I was hooked as soon as I started to read it because there is so much going on in it. Paranormal, romance, suspense and lots of action. I loved the conversational style of this author and also the pace in which she tells the story. Stacy understands the voice of a teen! Alexis has a true to life feeling about her as she tries to figure out what is happening to her body and life, and in such a short amount of time. I loved too that this book never left me feeling as if I knew what was going to happen next. I kept reading and wanting to see where I was going to end up. I am very excited to read the rest of the books in the series. I will watch for other books from this author. I'm happy I do not need to wait long on the cliff hanger! :) Thank you, Stacy, for a terrific series.

HASH(0xa009d9f0) out of 5 stars Everything to love - Better than Twilight Dec 27 2015
By Book Enthusiast - Published on

Let me start the review by saying... ignore the reviews... yes even mine.... Read a sample for yourself. If you like it (and I think you will) then grab it. If you don't, then skip it. You should know right away how you feel about it. No one review can decide this for you.

That said, I want to share my experience. Please keep in mind, I am a LOVER of books, not a book critic. If you ENJOY reading and read for that reason, this book is for you.

Another reviewer compared this book to Game of Thrones and authors such as "Kim Harrison, Steven King, George R. R. Martin, Tolkien, and heck why not through in James Joyce get." I am using quote marks because it's STEPHEN King, not "Steven" and "throw" not "through" ... but alas, that reviewer was trying to point out how the editing in this book isn't as good as in other books, and I'm not sure they are the best judge of good editing with errors like that. Also I suggest if someone is going to reference amazing authors as thought they are the cream of the crop, the readers favorite examples of good writing, they should know how to spell those authors names.

However, they did get one thing right! This book has the same rating as Game of Thrones. As it should. It's equally as enjoyable to its readers and Game of Thrones is to its readers. For different reasons, though, because you can't really compare those audiences, just as you can't compare a horror novelist and an adult paranormal novelist to a young adult fantasy novelist. Potatoes, Tomatoes.

One of the BEST Things about this book, and I imagine is how most YA readers feel....... which is who this book is actually intended for....... is the main character, Alexis, who is the complete embodiment of everything that is awesome about young adult protagonists. Call it cliche, or call it what it is; an author who knows her audience!

The plot, however, is anything BUT cliche. I rather enjoyed the many twists and turns that kept me guessing, and one of the best things for me about reading an indie novel is the experience of getting something out of the box. No formulaic plot lines. Just heart and good story and characters that come to life on the page.

If you are an adult who is young at heart, you will enjoy this. If you are a teen, as this novel is intended for, you will go absolutely gaga over this. I can't wait to read more in this collection!

It's worth noting, I'm a HUGE Twilight fan. If you liked Twilight, you will love this. However, this is no Twilight re-write, so read only if you are ready for something fresh and new! The editing was must better than Twilight as well. (Sorry Twilight fans. I DO love Twilight but it could have used a better editor, especially seeing that it was traditionally published novel.)

This book exceeded my expectations. But don't take my word for it. The majority of reviewers agree! (And the minority have a review history that says it all!) Read a sample and decide for yourself. You have nothing to lose, and many hours of entertainment to gain. Happy reading!

HASH(0xa009da68) out of 5 stars Strong debut book by a fun writer! March 7 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Several current genres are filled right now with mediocre stories. This book is not one of them. I have to say that I am all in favor or supporting this writer because at the end of my Kindle copy of this book Stacy Claflin totally lifted my spirits and made me want to read everything she has written! Deception is the first book of hers I have ever read.

Alexis thinks she is a geeky normal girl, when she is far, far from that. Her parents favor her sister, but she doesn't know why. Soon Alexis starts to think she is adopted. If only it were that simple! In a generation who loves Twilight, Alexis finds out that her concern that she was adopted is only the tip of her upcoming issues. Alexis is equipped with powers that few of her kind have, and she is trying to master them and be sure she isn't going crazy. Folks from her past start showing up, and her memories are returning and they are both good, and foreboding. As Alexis makes new friends that she is dependent upon she starts to realize she is in over her head and some of the people she has been trusting might not be exactly who or what they seem to be.

The first part of the book had a bit of working with to get rolling, as it isn't always easy to start a series or a book off full tilt. However, Deception picks up more and more as it goes. By the time I got to the end, I was ready for the next book in this series. I hope that it will be available for review, because I would really like that!

My copy of this book was given by Story Cartel in exchange for my honest review, and nothing more.

HASH(0xa009d9c0) out of 5 stars Deception March 11 2013
By Sienna @ Lost to Books - Published on
Format: Paperback
It took me awhile to get to this book as I have had a lot going on but once I started it I found it hard to tear myself away from it. The story started off hinting at Alexis's strange powers, highlighting her difference and this instantly intrigued me as to what she was.

As the book went on her powers and the mystery built and I really didn't see what she really was coming. It was a big shock. At first when this information was discovered I didn't know how Claflin would develop the plot and I was worried about how the book would continue. However I needn't have. The story remained unique and original even when the genre wasn't. The difference in plot separated this book from others a like it and it was refreshing to read.

I loved the romance between Tanner and Alexis more than with Cliff as it didn't have so many of the cliches in it. It seemed more natural and easier to fall in love with them both. That didn't mean I disliked Cliff, just at times the romance was a bit to cheesy for my tastes. Saying that I still wanted Alexis to end up with him in the end though.

There were minor issues with the editing, just a few missed words here and there which caused me to re-read the sentences a few time to make sure it wasn't me but it didn't really detract. The only major thing I can say bad about this book is the ending! I was watching the page count going down thinking "how is this book going to end so quickly during the middle of this dramatic part?" Well it ends abruptly on a huge cliff hanger. It did leave me feeling slightly dissatisfied as there wasn't much resolution or a defined break but it does leave you wanting more and I definitely want to read the sequel.
