I borrowed this one from the library and I am happy for it. Everything about this book screamed that I should love it: popular blog (though not one I've followed), gluten free and vegetarian. What more could one ask for?

Let's get this straight - the book itself is beautiful (great pictures, easy to read and things certainly look appealing). The recipe instructions are largely simple and easy to follow. The recipes themselves is where this beauty went wrong. Food is bland and unpalatable. Something here, necessary to create 'the magic', is just missing. We tried several recipes (the pea pesto gnocchi for one) and the result was dreadful - we actually tossed the massive amount of leftovers out (I love gnocchi and I make it from scratch often so I do not think my skill or tastebuds were the issue). I will likely force myself to try a few more recipes and update review accordingly.

I also found the organizational structure of the book odd/ hard to navigate. Recipes are by ingredient, so you will find breakfast recipes mixed in with mains and snacks. From a cursory glance (i.e. I read everything, but didn't count), there doesn't seem to be a good amount of main courses.

This book is probably 'ok' for someone that is just beginning to cook/ prefers their food plain (if you want simpler, there are better books - buy YUM Universe instead or My Darling Lemon Thyme), but it wasn't for me.

I was very excited to get this book after browsing through the her blog and the iPhone app. The book and pictures are very appealing, I have been using whole foods, plant based recipes for several years now, and am no stranger to following recipes having worked in a kitchen for several years. I really wanted to love this book, I have been hooked on the ohsheglows cookbook and was hoping for something along the same lines with a different twist. I was rather disappointed with this one.

I had several recipes fail (one failed twice on two separate occasions), the issue I have with this book, is not that the recipes failed, but that so many failed in such a big way - i.e. nothing was salvageable, i had to throw it out and it was a waste of money and food, I have the necessary equipment, and I have been cooking for several years (many of those were in a professional kitchen), so it is not all error on my part. The proportions do not add up, the measurement style is not always clear, and is not always consistent, and for the most part a lot of the recipes were bland, lacking seasoning and favour. I believe the counter argument to this assertion is that it takes some time to cut out the flavours from processed foods and get used to the taste of the raw vegetables and whole foods themselves, however, I have been eating a clean diet for several years so I do not believe this is the cause. The gluten free breads/ baked goods need some tweaking, the most successful method I have used to "mimic" a gluten flour incorporates a ratio of roughly 40% whole gran to 60% starch, often with some added bonding agent, Ella does not use this method, but generally uses a whole grain flour on its own, and a lot of the baked goods i tried turned out flavourless crumbly, and overly dense.

I have never given such a low ranking for any item before. I was very disappointed with this book. First, the organization of recipes was somewhat confusing. For example if I wanted to find a good main meal I had to go through all the recipes that included nuts, beans and legumes, vegetables etc instead of having main sections for entrees, soups, salads desserts etc. as I usually find with other cookbooks. Second, most of the recipes she offered seemed not to have gone through a taste test. All the ones I prepared were either tasteless or just plain awful or both. Also, the majority of recipes were so simple that a inexperienced cook could be more creative. I certainly wouldn't prepare one of her recipes for company without trying it first. On the plus side, most the recipes called for healthy ingredients. Is that really deserving of a plus or just common sense for the modern day cook. I definitely would not recommend purchasing this item.

Love her blog and instagram page. Buy this if you love to cook, are health concious, and love trying new things. I bought this as a gift as well and have recommended it to many people

I enjoyed reading her story. Most ingredients are easy to obtain, and she provides useful info. I have just tried two vegetable recipes, and found the taste combinations" different" and awkward to put together. But, there is a sufficient amount of recipes I am still eager to try.

I bought this book after following the Deliciously Ella blog for quite a while. The book is well written, the ingredients easy to find, the instructions are easy to follow and the photos are beautiful but unfortunately, the recipes themselves are quite bland. I tried several recipes and most of them did not turn out that well despite following the instructions very closely. In theory, the combination of ingredients seems magic but when put to the test, many of the recipes often failed. I am an avid cook and have tried several recipes from the blog which have turned out great (e.g. mango cashew smoothie, super food bread, chocolate chia cookies, pecan pie, etc.) so I was unfortunately quite disappointed with the book.
