Great book! I'm am currently a mechanical engineering major, but prior, for 6 years I was a welder by trade after attending a vocational high school. This book teaches specifics and fundamental design ideas that are not taught in college programs. Instead of the pure theoretical mathematics that engineering books contain, it uses practical applied algebra to solve concepts that are usually overcomlicated. Omer Blodgett gives an engineer with no manufacturing experience the ability to understand the practical concepts and methods in designing weldments and structures. The book can bridge the gap between an engineer, and the fabricator. I recommend to any engineer.

As a structural engineer with a lot of references, I found this book and Mr. Blodgett's other book to be extremely useful. This type of design and knowledge is lost in more contemporary texts and it has been very useful for practical machine design.

Great book, too bad it's not in publish anymore. There are plenty of books on mechanics of materials that cover a lot of the same topics, but this book makes it really easy to find and has a lot of great example problems. A must have for mechanical, civil, and structural engineers alike.

This book is written in the old school way. That is, the intention of the writer is to make you knowledgeable in the stated topic of the book. You will need an engineering background to understand it. However, unlike most "engineering" books of today, it is not watered down by the legal department. It gives real engineering knowledge that is useful to real engineers. Omar Blodgett has taught me much through his measured approach and holistic view of the problems faced by real design engineers. Similarly, I've compared my grandfather's "Mark's Engineering Handbook" to my newer version and I much prefer the older version.
