Grow closer to God through the hymns you love to sing

The great hymns of the faith are not only meaningful songs we love to sing--they teach us about God and ourselves. They are miniature Bible studies that lead us effortlessly toward worship, testimony, exhortation, prayer, and praise. They clear our minds, soothe our nerves, verbalize our worship, summarize our faith, and sing our great Redeemer's praise.

In Devotions for Lent, bestselling author Robert J. Morgan has gathered favorite hymns as well as classic, lesser-known gems to guide your quiet time with God during Lent. Each devotional contains an opening story about the hymn or its writer, the lyrics to the hymn, and a closing Scripture. Hymn titles are listed in the table of contents so you can find your favorites easily.

Perfect for any music lover, this is a unique journey into the songbook of praise that has defined our worship for centuries.

Robert J. Morgan is a Gold Medallion Award-winning author of more than 30 books, including Then Sings My Soul. He has served as pastor of The Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, Tennessee, for nearly 30 years and holds degrees from Columbia International University (BS), Wheaton Graduate School (MA), and Luther Rice Seminary (MDiv). He and his wife have 3 daughters and 10 grandchildren.

HASH(0x9920ede0) out of 5 stars Biblical and helpful Feb. 12 2013
By P. Creeden - Published on
I hadn't thought on meditating on Hymns for lent. These hymns add a familiar flavor to the time of preparing for Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. Even if you are adding a devotional time of study with biblical scriptures, this is a good addition.

HASH(0x99297204) out of 5 stars Worth the investment, but could have been better April 11 2013

I loved the hymns and the stories behind it, but sometimes the stories/intros didn't always connect to the message of the hymn or really focus my heart on meditating for Lent.

But as a lover of hymns, it was nice to have a song to sing each day and just bask in His love, mercy and glory doing it.

HASH(0x99297630) out of 5 stars interesting, but I wouldn't call it "devotions" Feb. 28 2013

I am enjoying this daily hymn read. I don't have access to a hymnal in English right now, but I grew up singing many of these songs, so it's nice to see the words! The fun facts about the hymns are also interesting to me. The only critique I have is that so far none of these readings have challenged or inspired me, deepened my walk with God. So, it's an interesting read, but I wouldn't quite classify it as a devotional.

HASH(0x99297648) out of 5 stars Great devotions based on hymns! March 27 2013

I really enjoyed this book of devotions because I was able to relate each day's study with old hymns that I sang as a child in church, which made them more meaningful to me. Thank you and GOD bless you!

HASH(0x99666990) out of 5 stars Nice devotional book March 22 2013

My husband and I are using this book through this Lenten season on each of our Kindles. As the title suggests, the author gives meditations based on hymns, including the story behind the hymn's writing and some comments and a Scripture verse to go with each day's reading. Some of the hymn stories are a little briefer than I would like (I would prefer more details about the writing of the hymn), but all in all this is a nice devotional book to read in the weeks prior to the celebration of our Lord's resurrection.
