I agree, this book needs to be re-issued. The copy I keep belonged to my mother, and it was my favorite growing up. I think its an excellent book, it discusses delicate social issues while stil staying child-appropriate.

Okay for Youngsters

I am writing about Gypsies, and this book only added to my knowledge through Gypsy family life. This is a story about a Gypsy girl here in America, and the discrimination portrayed in the book is pretty standard in Europe too. There are better written accounts of stories like this, and I did not finish the book.
Holds up well.

I loved this book as a child and love it even more now. Many of the books from this era do not hold up well in light of the changes that have taken place in the last 50 years. This one is still a winner.

It was a perfect gift.

Excellent book about children's harsh treatment of others who seem 'different' to them and about a child's adjustment after having been ripped out of one culture into a radically different one. Charming story! I was late discovering Rumer Godden and have ordered several of her books from Amazon. Glad I finally found her.
I love reading anything that Rumer Godden writes

I love reading anything that Rumer Godden writes. I enjoyed this very much. A cute story with a bit of a moral to it.
