Heather’s Pick

“Dr. Freedhoff tackles the diet issue head on with compassion, wisdom and a ‘you can do it’ attitude. His approach is simple, practical and effective. He touches on the very essence of what you need to know to fully understand how easy it is to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. This is our go-to-book to help us stay on track.”
—Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod, BodyBreak

“Few people know as much about weight loss as Dr. Yoni Freedhoff. It is no surprise that he has produced a book that is the perfect combination of evidence-based facts and good, solid, usable advice. There is so much misinformation in the media about dieting, and so many trendy and near useless diets. Yoni’s book is exactly what we need: a science-informed—and fun to read—road map to long-term weight loss success.”
—Timothy Caulfield, Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy, University of Alberta, and author of The Cure for Everything: Untangling the Twisted Messages about Health, Fitness and Happiness
“This is a seriously mindful weight-loss program that works well for his patients.”
—Marion Nestle, Food Politics
“It’s not a quick-fix diet but a fix to the dieting mentality. . . . There’s no judgment and it’s driven by a mentality of acceptance. I especially love how he suggests silencing the critical voices in your head with a more constructive one. . . . Freedhoff says to ask yourself: What can I do right now that will help a little bit? One idea: Check out this book!”
Canadian Living (blog)
“Freedhoff is a one-man cheering squad with a down-to-earth, resonant, real-world weight-loss prescription focusing on a dieter’s personal best. Enhanced with case studies, 35 pages of recipes, resources lists, plus the author’s website and award-winning blog, this book will help dieters win by losing.”
Publishers Weekly

“What makes The Diet Fix a game-changer is the plain-spoken way that Dr. Freedhoff presents the reality that no diet can work if it makes life unbearable.”
Evolving Health
“Clearly this is not your average diet book. From what I’ve seen over years examining (and participating in) the diet and fitness industry, if any diet book ‘works’ it’s going to be this one. And if it does, I’m looking forward to a sequel.”
—Patrick Mustain, Scientific American (blog)

“Dr. Yoni Freedhoff is one of the most respected authorities in sustainable weight loss today, and this book proves it. Completely lacking in any of the bovine droppings rife in the diet industry, this thoughtful and wise book puts you on the proper path to being leaner and healthier for life.”
—James S. Fell, syndicated fitness columnist for the Chicago Tribune and author of Lose it Right

“In his refreshingly fad-free diet book, Dr. Freedhoff writes with sharp-eyed skepticism and genuine compassion about the myths and mistakes that torpedo even the most dedicated dieters. Fortunately, he also has the solutions—simple, sustainable fixes that will reframe your approach to weight loss and long-term health.”
—Alex Hutchinson, author of Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights?

“Dr. Yoni Freedhoff passionately demonstrates in The Diet Fix that he is every dieter’s advocate. His 10 Day Reset will not only make you healthier, but it will also turn you into an activist around your own health.”
—Jamie Beckerman, M.D., author of The Flex Diet
“Millions of people are suffering through restriction, denial, sacrifice, hunger and a frustrating yo-yo cycle of weight loss and regain, yet they still struggle to manage their weight. This serial dieting breeds guilt, shame, depression, despair and binge eating. If you’re one of these ‘traumatic dieters,’ Dr. Yoni Freedhoff’s book, The Diet Fix, will not only provide a much needed sigh of relief, it will be a godsend. It might even save your life.”
—Tom Venuto, author of Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle
“Yoni Freedhoff’s The Diet Fix is a no-nonsense approach to realistic weight management by a recognized expert in the field. Based on simple but time-proven principles of chronic disease management including self-monitoring, goal setting, persistence and perseverance, this step-by-step guide to long-term weight management provides the evidence, debunks common myths and is chock-full of practical tips—the ultimate diet book for anyone wanting to stop dieting and start living.”
—Arya M. Sharma, MD/PhD, Disc. (h.c.), FRCPC Professor of Medicine
“Here finally is a book capturing the nuts and bolts of the dieting culture that has gripped North America. With Dr. Freedhoff’s clear presentation of fact supported by years of firsthand experience, a crystal-clear picture of what works, what doesn’t and what is myth emerges. The Diet Fix is a service to all.”
—Tosca Reno

“Finally a diet plan that can work because it won’t make you miserable! Like all honest approaches to a better life, The Diet Fix is rooted in a deep understanding of how people are wired, and inspired by optimism about their true potential. You’ll never need to read another diet book.”
—Melanie Warner, author of Pandora’s Lunchbox
The Diet Fix delivers.  This is a wonderful approach to tackling the Diet Demons.  It allows people to keep what they like most about food—the taste and indulgences—and to get rid of what they don’t like about food—overeating and guilt. It’s about balance. Regaining balance in our diet as well as in our lives.”
—Brian Wansink (Ph.D.), author of Mindless Eating and Slim by Design

“After reading Dr. Freedhoff’s book I can conclude that only an expert, who has real life experience treating patients suffering with weight issues, could have written this guide to weight management. Dr. Freedhoff distills the science of dieting into a very easy and practical read with proven results. Anybody who is battling weight issues should turn off their computer, get off the blog sites boasting miraculous weight loss, and just read this book.”
—Garth Davis, M.D., author of The Expert’s Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery

“I doubt you need anyone to tell you that ‘dieting’ is badly broken; just look around! But if you would like to know how to fix it, and adopt a sensible, sustainable, and satisfying approach to weight control—then you certainly do need to hear from Dr. Yoni Freedhoff.  In The Diet Fix, Dr. Freedhoff draws upon his excellent knowledge of relevant research, and his many years of clinical experience to serve up empowering insights that are as much about living well as they are about losing weight. This is a terrific book.”
—David Katz, MD, MPH, author of Disease-Proof: The Remarkable Truth About What Makes Us Well
The Diet Fix is the real deal: a book that challenges the conventional wisdom about losing weight. This compassionate and hope-filled guide serves up the secrets to achieving—and maintaining—the weight that’s right for you. Forget the quick fix: The Diet Fix will give you the tools you need to (finally) make peace with food.”
—Ann Douglas, author of The Mother of All Pregnancy Books
“This isn’t a detox diet, it’s a diet detox—a 10-day ‘reprogramming’ that will free you forever from the damaging and defeating cycle of failed diets. Those suffering from Post Traumatic Dieting Stress (which is to say, most of us) may find it hard to believe that an approach this gentle, doable, and sane could ever work. Trust me: The Diet Fix offers an end to the madness and the keys to lasting weight control.”
—Monica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, author of Nutrition Diva’s Secrets for a Healthy Diet

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy to read and I'm so glad. I've been following Yoni's blog and site for a while now and he seemed sensible. I hoped that the book would not disappoint and it absolutely didn't!

This is not your standard diet book. You know the one-exclude some food group, the weight falls off, it'a a miracle! I've gone through quite a number of them and the miracle was always short lived. I've yo-yoed up and down for the last 20 years and have an extensive wardrobe of different sized clothes to prove it. For the first time in a long time, I actually have some hope of making lasting changes.

There are 3 main sections: The Reveal, The 10 Day Reset and The Recovery. The book starts out by describing diets gone wrong and introduces Post-Traumatic Dieting Disorder. I recognised myself in many of the descriptions. Too many! I'm pretty sure I'm a classic case of PTDD. Luckily, there is hope for me. It leads into a 10 day/10 step programme to fix the damage and start losing sensibly. It's all wonderfully doable and makes sense. Pitfalls are covered and there's also a great recipe section at the back. Even I could manage them! The final section teaches you how to keep these behaviours going for life.

It's wonderfully down to earth and doable. There are no false promises, no starvation, no special foods. It's based on scientific evidence, a wealth of experience and real life. I have recommended this book to everybody-particularly all my friends who have had similar experiences with losing and regaining or just struggling in general.

If I had to pick one word to describe the tone of the book it would be "kind". No matter how many times you've tried and failed, there's hope for you. You're not alone and you're not a failure. I could feel myself relaxing and exhaling as I read. With this approach, I'm confident you (and I) can actually succeed. For life!

Finally, someone who knows all the wrong things that I am thinking about food! Just reading this book has taken a weight (no pun intended) off of my shoulders. There are reasons behind every dieter's struggle -- Dr. Freedhoff's book is helping me forget why I am always failing to lose weight and feeling guilty about it; his research is showing me how I can take a more positive approach to living. Dr. Freedhoff's information in the book is easy to understand and easy to put into practice. This is a book that everyone should read, especially those, like me, who suffer from "Post Traumatic Dieter's Disorder". Thanks, Dr. Freedhoff, for sharing your knowledge!

I've not done any specific kind of diet before, but just cutting back wasn't working. I saw a review of this book in the University of Toronto Alumni magazine (Dr. Freedhoff is also an alumnus) and though I'd give it a try as it sounded sensible. I wanted something straight forward with no gimmicks, as well as something that was sustainable. I haven't been absolutely following it, but it has caused me to look at the caloric content of what I eat, as well as the protein content, and I've made adjustments accordingly. I've not been hungry, and I've been losing an average of a pound a month for the past 8 months. It's become the "new normal" and it's not really hard. I'm glad I found it and read it.

Low fat, low carb, low sugar. Gluen-free, paleo, blood type. The number of "expert"- endorsed fad diets has become overwhelming, so much so that most struggling with their weight can no longer separate the pseudoscience from the facts. No wonder the vast majority of those who lose weight eventually put it all back on. No wonder those same people feel guilty, ashamed and desperate. Refreshingly, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, a family physician with his own obesity practice, takes a different approach to eating. His popular blog, "Weighty Matters," criticizes obesity myths and writes with a knowledge of the medical literature combined with extensive experience. His new book, "The Diet Fix," advocates for the healthiest life you can enjoy: no starvation, no cleanses, no traumatic sacrifices and no miracle supplements.

Freedhoff opens his book with “Dieting’s Seven Deadly Sins”: Hunger (not sustainable), sacrifice (leads to certain failure), willpower (important but permanent resistance is futile), food restrictions (manage, not banish food groups), sweating (you can't outrun your fork), seeking perfection (need to accommodate setbacks) and denial (suffering becomes harder to both sustain and deny). Given that typical "diets" don't deliver long-term results, negative emotions and expectations run high among dieters. Freedhoff reviews and addresses the most common side-effects: guilt, shame, failure, depression, despair, binge eating and metabolic slowdown.

But at the core of the book lies what Freedhoff calls the “Ten Day Reset,” which recalibrates expectations about healthy eating. Permanent changes in weight go hand in hand with permanent changes to life; thus, each day describes a new set of skills to support behavior change.
