Ortech Controls is the Traeger grills controller expert and leading supplier of electronic controls for wood pellet grills.
Working closely with Joe Traeger, Ortech designed and manufactured the original electronic controls for his revolutionary line of wood pellet grills, including the 3-speed and digital controls. We have manufactured and shipped more than 100,000 3-speed and digital thermostat controls for Traeger grills.

You now get a real knob for the P-# adjustments (if you don't know about these, you have bigger temp swings than you should - you need to read the Ortech manual). You also get 16 step of P adjustment, 0-15, vice the Traeger's 10 (0-9), but I haven't seen a use for them. The delay is too long at that point to really be useful.
The display now flashes the decimal points (which you never see on the Traeger) to let you know that the igniter (or hot tube) is on and hot for the first 4 minutes when you turn it on. You now have a great visual clue of when it is safe to close the lid after starting your grill. When the dots stop flashing, shut the lid - you're ready to safely preheat for whatever temp.
The display now rounds the current temp to the nearest 5 degrees. The original Traeger shows to the nearest degree, which means it is constantly changing, up/down one or two degrees, causing more observation than really necessary. Rounding to the nearest 5 takes out a lot of the "ripple", where you are trying to figure out if it is still dropping temp, or starting a swing back up, etc. Granted, the new one is not as accurate, but it really 'quiets' the display, so the numbers only change when there is a meaningful change in temp. I like it this way better.
You also lose the useless power switch (explained in the shutdown function change)
The lowest setting on the Traeger controller (Shutdown), is replaced by the OFF function on this controller. Both function the same - it runs the fan for an additional 10 minutes to ensure all the pellets in the bowl have completely burned, then shuts down. But two improvements here - you get a display that counts down the 10 minutes (Traeger is dark during the 10 minutes), and it shuts power down when the 10 minutes is up (the Traeger is still technically on unless you flick the rocker switch, which doesn't even exist on this unit).
This unit also has a shorter temp probe (only 4 inches vice 6, if memory serves).
Other than that, they are essentially the same controller. Same color-codes/same connectors for the wires, etc. Installation is 5-15 minutes, depending on skill and experience, but it's only 2 screws on the face plate, then disconnect the 4 molex plugs. At that point, the temp probe is two wires connected to a Phoenix-style connector (small flat blade screw driver needed). Then, a single Philips head holds the probe in the actual cooking space. That's all the connections. Biggest time is figuring out all the wire ties to cut to get the cabling loose under the pellet hopper. That's literally what took the longest.
The unit itself is much heavier and more solid than the original, and installation is easy.
Overall function is very good, after some initial adjusting. It took about two cook cycles to get the smoke adjustment set correctly, but after that it works like a charm.
And the best part; it was cheaper than the original manufacturer part. Don't hesitate to purchase this unit if you are in need of a new controller.
I had no idea what I was missing! I had been using the lid thermometer and wondering why my cooks are going so much faster...
Well this unit includes a digital thermometer you install above the firebox that gives you active temp read out on the LED screen. I have come to find that the digital thermometer reads about 25+ degrees higher than the lid... But I didn't really have a choice before.... Smoke was smoke was smoke. I couldn't adjust.
This unit you can not only dial in a more accurate temp, but you can also asjust your smoke temps to whatever suits your needs.
The shutdown feature is also a huge added bonus.
Install was super easy. Took me all but 15 min with a screwdriver and wrench.
I highly recommend to anyone with the old 3 position switch to make the upgrade. This unit gives you way more control and is far more accurate for long cooks.
No longer are my pork butts cooking 2 hours faster than expected. I did 2 yesterday in the perfect range of 9 hours at 225.
