Sometimes family can be the death of you...

17 year-old Tara Godfrey's normal life is uprooted. Not when she breaks up with her longtime boyfriend, George, but when she tries to shortcut home. In a darkened alley, Tara comes face to face with death threats, werewolves, and family secrets in a single night. Her only ally? The hottest, most mysterious werewolf she'll ever meet. And he doesn't like her already.

From Dirty Blood:

I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that's not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can't seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted-and then she was a wolf. All snapping teeth and extended claws. But by the time I stood over her lifeless body, she was a girl again. That's about the time I went into shock. And that was the moment he showed up.

Now, all I can do is accept the truths that are staring me in the face. One, Werewolves do exist. And two, I was born to kill them.

"Heather Hildenbrand is one of my favorite YA paranormal authors. Her Dirty Blood series is a must-read!" -Ella James, author of the Stained series

Fans of YA Paranormal, Hunters, Shifters, and Werewolves will love the Dirty Blood series!

It is funny to consider an urban fantasy to be “charming” but that is just what Dirty Blood is – blood, guts, gore, murder and all. Without looking up how it is placed on the genre ladder, I would say that this qualifies as young adult, or new adult, but I found it extremely readable as an adult urban fantasy novel as well. Tara is 17-years-old, but she seems more mature, while still throwing the occasional temper tantrum. Of course, if I were her, I would have thrown a fit and fallen down in it at the way she is treated by those around her.

You see, Tara thinks that she is just a normal girl, with a normal boyfriend she has been friends with most of her life. Well, until he turned into the football obsessed moron who ditches their dates for recruiters, agents and interviews. But nevertheless, normal school, normal activities, normal life. That is, until a girl turns into a wolf right in front of her and proceeds to try her best to rip Tara’s throat out. From that point on, you can toss ‘normal’ straight out the window and go for spectacularly weird all the way around. For Tara is a Hunter, from a long line of Hunters. Genetic killers, born to kill werewolves.

As Tara’s life becomes more and more surreal, she begins to realize that her whole life has been a lie, and that she has been left open to the perils of her blooming talents and the scent of Hunter that the wolves can sense, with no training to help her survive. While her mother may have been ‘protecting’ her, she has also left her open to attack with no defense.

This is a very fast paced read.

Started reading and could not put down.

WOW is one word that I would use to describe this book. I read it in one night and loved it.

The setting, back story, and the story telling was just awesome.

Heather Hildenbrand has created a world that is unique and different from the regular world but with enough of the regular world thrown in to cause conflict.

The story was non stop from the beginning to the end, and once I got to the end was disappointed, because it ended and I now needed to know what was going to happen next.

I look forwad to seeing what is going to happen next in this world and to Tara and her friends.

I would definitely suggest this book to my friends without worrying that it might not satisfy their reading likes.

Well written. The story line is interesting.
It kinda threw me when the werewolves could actually speak; I didn't expect it.
The concept with Hunters and Weres is good.

HASH(0x9dd51060) out of 5 stars another one bites the dust Oct. 1 2011

On one hand, this book may have everything you are looking for in an easy read... Good looking girl with hidden talent, one mysterious good looking guy who saves her and then takes on the job of protecting her and another guy who wants her as well. On the other hand it may be a symbol of everything you didn't like in all the other YA novels you have read so far. Sub par writing, flat conversations, skin deep character development etc... Once more, it seems like I belong to the minority in here who is giving a bad review to a book that scores 4+ stars in average. I went back and re-read some sections to see if I was missing something but I just came up with the same feeling. This is not a well-written book. I generally give 3 stars to books with writing issues but have original story lines. I can't do that for this book because if you are a fan of this genre, it is possible that every angle of the story will remind you something you have read before. Oh well, if you decide to buy it, hope you will enjoy it more then I did...

HASH(0x9dd512ac) out of 5 stars Another Great Book from Heather Hildenbrand April 18 2011

I recently read another of Heather Hildenbrand's books, Across the Galaxy, and absolutely loved it. So needless to say, I was anticipating this book with very high expectations. Dirty Blood did not disappoint. Dirty Blood offers the much beloved werewolf story, but with a new, cool twist. In Dirty Blood, there are werewolves, and Hunters. Weres and Hunters are natural enemies, their purpose to destroy each other. The main character is Tara, a seemingly typical girl. But, when Tara is pulled into the midst of a supernatural world she never knew about, she must find her place. Who will help her find her way in this new world? Wes,a gorgeous guy who was deep, dark secrets of his own. Dirty Blood has action, adventure, humor and romance. The action begins right away and never lets up. The end leaves you breathless and hungry for more. I have my fingers crossed that Dirty Blood will have a sequel....very soon!

HASH(0x9dd51270) out of 5 stars Lots of Potential June 14 2011
By Lisa Emma Kilgariff - Published on
Format: Paperback
This was a book with so much potential. While I enjoyed reading it, I couldn't help but roll my eyes a couple of times at the completely typical YA wolf references that, like many people have already pointed out on Goodreads, really reminded me of another popular YA that had wolves in it (guess which one...). We also have a family who lives in the woods, teenagers with fancy cars... There was really no need for the story to have quite so many similarities and it would have been better without them.

Another failing was the insta-bond between our protagonist and her love interest. I really dislike this sort of relationship and while it was explained later in the book, there has to be another way for writers to create a relationship, right?

There were some bits that I did enjoy about the story though. The beginning was fantastic, what a way to start a book! I liked the dramatic style that let the plot shine through, pulling me further into the story than my tired eyes would have liked.

Despite its failings, the characters, plot and wonderful writing style have made a lasting impression and have left me wondering about what will happen next. I would recommend Dirty Blood to fans of paranormal or werewolfy YA books.

HASH(0x9dd51768) out of 5 stars Great YA Paranormal Read June 6 2011

I thought this was a great YA paranormal read. We get everything we want from a book. Supernaturals, mystery, suspense, action and a great romance.

I loved Wes from minute one. He was awesome and amazing and totally hooked you in. There was just this magnetic pool.

Also loved how we jumped right in, within the first chapter we seen where she killed the werewolf. And from there we were totally in the action.

I really could not put the book down. I wanted to see how it all played out. There was a lot of mystery surrounding it and I am way to nosy not to know exactly how it all plays out.

If you are a YA Paranormal Fan then this is a book for you!!!

HASH(0x9dd51a5c) out of 5 stars "Dirty Blood" series, book 1 - great start! Dec 28 2011

Format: Paperback
Tara Godfrey is just a normal girl, living in Frederick Falls, VA on the night her life changed completely. After breaking up with her boyfriend at the pool hall and sending him home, she is unsuccessful in finding a ride home, so sets out to walk to the bus stop. While going through an alley, she comes across a girl who seems to be in some distress - however, before she can try to help the girl, the girl ... changes into a wolf, and attacks Tara. Tara, to her surprise, manages to not only survive, but to actually kill the werewolf. With the help of her new friend Wes she discovers that everything she thought she knew about herself was a lie - she is a Hunter, and it is her destiny to fight werewolves. How is it she never knew about this? And what are the "sides" that Wes alludes to? Will Tara decide to embrace her destiny, or will she decide to go about her life as it was?

While I don't dislike werewolves, I'm more of a vampire person, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. I was a bit astonished - no, taken aback is more like it - when I learned that the favored weapon of the Hunters against werewolves was ... a wooden stake. Seriously? Why not a knife? Well, that is actually explained a bit later, but it still seems a bit strange - I hope it is further explained in later books. The characters are well developed and the plot is smooth and quick-paced. Overall the editing and writing style are well-done - at least in the first third of the book or so. After that, there are more editing errors, but still not too bad. This is classified as young adult, since the main character is a 17-year-old girl, and overall it's a book I would feel comfortable letting younger readers have - there is some violence, but it's not bad, and while there are some romantic scenes, there is no sex. I was also happy that the romance between the characters seemed more or less realistic. Overall, a great book, one I'd definitely recommend for fans of werewolves and paranormal/urban fantasy.
