I have seen the adverts on this movie and a couple of trailers, but there is a third movie I am waiting to be delivered. Therefore, I will be watching them all on a marathon night when the third arrives. I'm just like that with series movies.

If you like the Hunger Games, Maze Runner or Harry Potter, you'll like Divergent. For me and my wife it's just OK but for our 20 year old daughter it was great.

Divergent, based on a trilogy of books by Veronica Roth and follows an all too familiar tween movie formula ... young, innocent, compassionate, female teen who doesn't quite fit into society's and is faced with an event (in Divergent's case "The Test") after which the teen must quickly grow up, discover themselves and their special skills, lose their innocence and ultimately become a strong willed heroine who saves the day.

Of course along the way our heroine is tormented by others around her for being weak as she constantly struggles with herself to do the right thing. Then there's the inevitable romance which starts out with uncertainty, then transitions into awkwardness (does he like me?) and eventually turns into a mutual attraction between a sexy girl and hunky guy ... who knew that would happen?

Yes Divergent is a formula movie ... the story is old and the plot is predictable but that doesn't make it bad.

Divergent probably won't win any Oscars, but the story is entertaining and the acting and cinematography are good.

Overall Divergent is worth watching, I'm just not sure it's worth buying. I'd recommend renting this one.

I didn't quite buy into the premise that in the future, people are only allowed to exhibit one personality. You can be brave OR intelligent OR kind, etc. - but not more than one. That would make you 'divergent' and therefore an enemy of the state. This film speaks mainly to teenagers and specifically to the emotional fantasies of young girls. It's all about not being conformist, conquering inhibitions, being accepted by the group and of course, gaining the attention and affection of the mysterious, young hunk.

As contrived as I feel the setup is, I found Divergent to be an engaging film with some cool ideas and scenes. The sets, effects and stunt work were all excellent and the story was fun, although increasingly far-fetched as it progresses. I avoided this one because the trailers rubbed me the wrong way but it's better than I expected and good enough to make me see the sequel.

Special Features are good with featurettes, two commentaries and more. Rated PG-13 (USA), PG (Canada), 12A in UK.

In the future, after an unnamed war, Brave New World Chicago becomes a walled city nation. There are 5 factions or work groups in this tiered society. People can choose which one they want to be in, after they go through a Sorting Hat test. Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) discovers she is a "divergent" i.e. someone who doesn't neatly fit into any group. Bummer about the DNA. Divergents are hunted and killed.

Beatrice hides this fact and joins a group of muscle headed protectors, changes her name to Tris and gets a tattoo. She enters a unisex "Starship Troopers" dorm where she will train and either make the grade or get cut and join the factionless beggars. Much of the film centers around her training and of course she meets a boy (Theo James) who helps her along the way until things go awry.

The production steals from a number of different pop culture iconic films/books. At times it was groan worthy. Having said that, I did enjoy the film, even while groaning through so many scenes. This was clearly aimed at teens, especially teen girls.

The film is worth seeing as a wannabe iconic production.

This was definitely one of the better book to movie adaptations I have seen.
The cast was exactly how I pictured them in my head. It's a movie I can watch multiple times and still find something I didn't see the first time.
Fans of the hunger games will appreciate the plot and the fast paced action appeals to both men and women. It's a must watch thrill ride.

This is a pretty solid adaptation of the book, though the book is better. The movie left out some sequences that explain the characters better and the dialogue in the movie seems to have been dumbed down.
The Bluray itself though is amazing - the picture itself is crisp and clear and the sound quality is one of the best I've heard.

Often, books are better than the movies, in this case that is NOT true. I watched the first 3 movies, then bought the books because I wanted more details about the stories and more in-depth knowledge about the characters. I didn’t get what I was looking for from these books. There was a lot of “filler” in the books that thankfully the movie left out. The movies have “cut the fat” and have delivered a better version of this series. The movie characters are WAY more believable than the book ones. Had I read the books first, I can’t say I would have care enough about the characters to watch the movies. In the books the characters are immature, whiny, inconsistent, overly dramatic in dialogue and actions and are down-right annoying. The movie sells Four as an authoritative figure with a commanding presence easily and Tris is convincingly a natural leader, stable and mature, capable of navigating her way through the roadblocks we see them face. The book never convinces me of any of these things. The movie follows the book fairly close (I could be wrong though, because I found my mind wandering endlessly throughout the book) but has it’s own spin (thankfully) on the plot. The characters are extremely well cast, delivering excellent performances all around. I recommend the movie over the book. But I’m a mature adult, so maybe the younger crowd would like the more immature book version….
