I thought this series was great, it took me four days to read the whole series I read it every chance I had. I was anxious to start reading these books thinking they were like the hunger games but I was wrong and am glad I was because they were totally unique from start to finish. The only thing I was really disappointed in was the ending but I can see why it went the way it did I was just routing for a different out come lol

"The Divergent" series is set in a dystopian future. All that remains of humanity (as far as the characters are aware) is concentrated in the former city of Chicago. Everyone is divided into one of five factions, with each exemplifying one human virtue - intelligence, selflessness, protectiveness, etc. Those who don't fit neatly into one category are labelled "divergent" and are considered dangerous.

The story is compelling, with lots of action and suspense. It's easy to get caught up in the story and the characters. Unfortunately, there are too many plot holes (one is too many), and the basic premise is not believable. In a real sampling of human individuals, a very large percentage would exhibit multiple aptitudes, so the faction system as conceived in the books would never work. There is an explanation about why these particular humans are different, but this is not revealed until the third book in the series, so for the first two I was unable to suspend disbelief, and that coloured how I felt about the entire series.

The character, Four/Tobias, is well crafted. This book gives some background about the character: the life he has in his original faction, the transfer to Dauntless, and the completion of initiation. The first three books, the Transfer, the Initiate, and the Son, are easy to follow. The forth book probably should be interwoven into the book Divergent because I kept flipping back and forth between the two books, reading Four's thoughts in the Traitor and getting into Tris's head in Divergent for the same events. Maybe Divergent should have alternate chapters, one chapter for Tris and the next for Four. (I sort wish to read more about Four.)

I am really hooked by the plot. The story presents a lot of dilemma of making life choices and finding the self. The confusion in self and the strife to find it make each character shine. I couldn't have said these things better myself; the characters and the plot tell them all. I find the "young adult fantasy" in me for the character Four/Tobias.

I initially bought this collection because I had seen the two first movies and didn't want to wait a year to see how the story ended. When I began the series, I really enjoyed the way in which the author described the way the character felt. I even got over the fact the story was written in first person and in present tense (which I usually find to be amateurish). As the story progressed, it soon became clear the action would not pick up any time soon. For all other instances of books being turned into movies, the book was always better. This is not one of those instances. The movie keeps only the best parts while the books often feel unduly long. Nonetheless, the story is great (though it would have been better had it been a little shorter) and the characters relatable. Overall worth a read-through, though I doubt I will be re-reading it any time soon.

Another quick comment: You DO NOT get cut by the leaves when you run through a corn field. I've done it and it's actually quite fun. But that was the only truly ghastly unrealistic detail. This author has great potential. I cannot wait to read her next book.

Book 1 = Amazing. Great story & I couldn't put it down.
Book 2 = Well, it wasn't as good as book 1 but it didn't suck.
Book 3 = What the hell was that? The story only went downhill from here.
