Keep your life in balance while maximizing the quality of life of an elderly loved one

When Shirley Roberts' father passed away, her life and career were put on hold as she focused on the demands of caring for her ailing mother, Doris. Drawing on their extensive business experience, Shirley and her brother devised a solution that they called Doris Inc. They applied management practices to caregiving to ensure that their mother received top-notch care, and they could still have lives of their own.

In Doris Inc. Shirley Roberts shares the strategies that worked so well for her family including:

  • Concrete advice about making tough decisions

  • Help navigating the health-care maze

  • Financial pitfalls and ways to avoid them

  • How to get help in a crisis

  • Tips on planning for your own golden years . . .

Praise for Doris Inc.

"I was thrust into a caregiving role for my parents without much support or guidance. It was a grueling and life-altering experience. I know just how significant a contribution Doris Inc. will make to the lives of caregivers and their loved ones."
Christine Lasky, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Toronto

"Doris Inc. has empowering insights that will help family caregivers lower their fear and stress and approach their role in a prepared, informed and proactive way."
Kathi Colwell, RN, Program Manager, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Providence Care Hospital, Kingston

Do you have a family member whom is reaching the twilight years, or whom is there already? Do you know of friends whom could use some advice with regards to how to manage the deteriorating health of an aging person, in the context of their own busy lives? I met the author of this book, yesterday, at a conference regarding home and vehicle modifications for elderly and disabled persons. I was really impressed with the author, and her book. The book is very insightful, and is very well-researched (and is endorsed by several geriatric medical specialists). The title can seem a bit strange to some, but essentially, the book tries to communicate a structure for addressing all of the sensitivities, and types of foresight and actions, that are required in order to manage the aging processes of a senior family member in the most positive and effective way. The book is written in a very engaging style, as the theme woven throughout the book chronicles the challenges that the author had dealing with the care, and eventual death, of her own parents. It provides wonderful and useful insight to children of aging parents, and it provides a type of awareness to aging parents themselves that gives such elders a legitimate resource that can help them to understand the importance of living in particular ways in order to avoid preventable injuries. This book is exceptional value for $20, and should be required reading for everyone in the midst of our aging population (one-quarter of Canadians will be over age 65 by 2020!)! This book is insightful and absolutely relevant! 5-stars!
