About the Author

Often referred to as the father of English poetry, Geoffrey Chaucer was a fourteenth-century philosopher, alchemist, astrologer, bureaucrat, diplomat, and author of many significant poems. Chaucer s writing was influential in English literary tradition, as it introduced new rhyming schemes and helped develop the vernacular tradition the use of everyday English rather than the literary French and Latin, which were common in written works of the time. Chaucer s best-known and most imitated works include The Canterbury Tales, Troilus and Criseyde, The Book of the Duchess, and The House of Fame.

Kathryn L. Lynch is Katharine Lee Bates and Sophie Chantal Hart Professor of English at Wellesley College. She is the author of The High Medieval Dream Vision: Poetry, Philosophy, and Literary Form and Chaucer s Philosophical Dream Visions and editor of Chaucer s Cultural Geography. Her articles have appeared in, among other publications, The Chaucer Review, Studies in the Age of Chaucer, and Speculum.

HASH(0xa59a1234) out of 5 stars Superb edition--new standard ed. for Chaucer's dream visions May 25 2007
By The Professor, Ann Marian - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Besides the excellent, scrupulously edited texts and Lynch's thorough notes and rich-though-brief introductions, this new edition contains a concise and incredibly useful guide to Chaucer's pronunciation that is alone worth the price of the book. The best edition for the undergraduate or professional scholar.

Wonderful resource! To anyone studying medieval literature or Chaucer, it is a must have. (if you are a student studying Chucer's other work it is still a good idea to read this--especially f you are working on a Master's or Doctoral thesis or dissertation!)

Kathyrn Lynch's headnotes are extremely helpful. It's a strong edition and the contextual material--selections of the works that Chaucer borrowed heavily from--, are essential for understanding the dream visions.

This was in perfect condition and showed up when it was supposed to be. The footnotes and translation are very helpful when reading tricky passages.

HASH(0xa59a1648) out of 5 stars Always a pleasure Jan. 30 2012

I love shopping with Amazon. This was among my required texts for school. It was priced well and arrived about two days before the estimated arrival date. The text is challenging but the supplemental essays and annotations are clear and gives great insight to understanding the work of Chaucer.
