I was shipped a fake. Not even a convincing one; L3 and R3 are extremely loud, there are huge dead zones on the left thumb stick, the plastic is flimsy and sharply cut and you can see through it so the LEDs inside can be seen from any angle instead of just through the little viewports for them, the color is wrong, and the RESET button is conspicuously missing; there's a hole for it, but no actual button. As if that wasn't proof enough, SCPTool actually announced that I'd plugged in a fake DS3 when I hooked it up to my PC as it apparently can tell the difference.
So I read some other reviews. Lots of other reviews from people who got fakes, all from sellers with different names. And then there are lots of reviews from people saying "Hmm, this color seems to be very cheap and flimsy compared to the other colors I've owned" -- Really, it's not that one color is more cheaply-made than another. What happened is that you got a fake. It looks like these sellers just pop up with a random name, ship out fakes until they're shut down, then re-open with a new name and scam more people. I imagine the guys who shipped me this fake will be shut down, but another seller is just going to pop up and do the same thing based on what I'm seeing in these other reviews.
At this point in the PS3's life span it won't be easy to find brand-new DS3 controllers. But I recommend against trying to buy them on Amazon, because it apparently has the same problem as eBay: sketchy sellers shipping out counterfeit items hoping to scam you out of your money.

It is 100% NOT a genuine Sony controller. The buttons have the wrong feel, graphics are different or missing, the analog sticks aren’t the same shape and don’t have that smooth feeling to them. There is no rear serial sticker. This is what I noticed in the first 5 minutes after it came out of the plain white box it came in. The ad and pictures on amazon ARE NOT this controller.
It’s a very good knock off and that’s not what I was ordering. If the ad says it’s a Sony, shows it in Sony packaging and the pictures show it just like a real Sony PS3 controller I expect a real Sony controller.
Having a hard time getting it to connect unless it’s plugged in charging.
I will be returning it because I don’t expect the quality to last like an original.
I attached pictures of the purchased white controller with a blue Sony controller as a comparison.

I received my version from PlayCanada and now that i have used it a bit longer, I am pretty sure it's a fake as well. The controller turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity despite the settings on the console to not power off controllers. According to all my research, this is one of the tell tale signs of a fake controller with their own ROM.
Knowing that now, that would also explain the color, the marginally lighter weight and the pretty loose USB port. It's still pretty close and as far as fakes go, it's pretty good work.
You should however be aware that the images and the name of the colour are very misleading. This controller is certainly not 'Deep Red'. The shade is rather a very bright and plastic like, looking kind of matte red. It's also nowhere near as glossy and high-quality looking as the image suggest.
Compared to the black controller I had before, the LEDs when charging can be clearly seen through the plastic from the top.

Can't complain. They work! I'm not sure if it's fake or not. I've seen other reviews saying they were. Oddly it came from Germany. The pink colour is off from a real one but I broke my old one so I cannot really complain. Also it came in the package had Sony papers and all it also has the barcodes on the back. If this is a fake it's very pro. Either way no complaints for the price! Picture shows my 2 definitely official PS3 controllers in the middle for comparison. The things I've noticed is that they turn off automatically
