About the Author
Emily Wight came to love Dutch cuisine when she married into a Dutch family. She is a writer, blogger, and recipe developer whose work has appeared in numerous magazines, anthologies, and websites. Quantities are wrong and inconsistent.
For example on page 32 where it is written that 1 lb is 250 grams. Another example is on page 82 where it is written that 1/2 lb is 680 grams. Obviously, no one checked for accuracy and consistency.
Garlic does not belong in the Dutch cuisine and it seems that there is a lot of garlic in this cookbook. I love garlic but it doesn't belong in the traditional recipes.
What also bothered me is that some of the dish names are spelled incorrectly in Dutch and even eet smakelijk!, which means bon appetit!, was misspelled.
Borrels are NOT Dutch tapas but they refer to alcoholic drinks, not dishes.
Borrelhapjes are little bites that accompany your borrel.
I was given this cookbook since I am a collector of cookbooks and was very excited to get this book as a gift, but I was disappointed and decided to bring it back to the store. It is not my intention to hurt the author's feelings .
By the way, I am Dutch, born and raised in Holland and was taught authentic Dutch cooking by my family. I also cooked professionally.

This book seeks to cure that, and it does so wonderfully. It covers typical Dutch recipes, and the influences of it's past colonies.
Well written, beautifully photographed, it covers everything from breakfasts through desserts.
Perhaps the best way that I can describe this book is by the following: my wife and I host foreign exchange students every year. This year, we are blessed with a wonderful Dutch young lady. While she is 100 percent Dutch, her mother came from Surinam (formerly Dutch Guinana) and her father's family came from Indonesia (formerly Dutch). She took one look at this book and squealed with delight! And insisted on preparing several of the dishes immediately. We were treated to Bitterballs, Kibbeling, Uitsmijter, and Saoto (Surinamese/Indonesian). What a treat! And so much different than the bland food that we assumed made up Dutch cooking!
I was sent this book as an ebook from Edelweiss, in return for a fair review. I think it speaks volumes to how much I enjoyed it that I ordered a hard copy from Amazon for our permanent collection!

So what is Dutch food exactly? It's food that feeds the soul. It is nourishing and warming, made with quality local ingredients and lots of flavorful spices. There is hearty proteins--meats, dairy, fish--as well as plenty of bread and sweets. It's practical and frugal and prepared simply. It's tasty comfort food, rich in butter and cheese, to feed you on every level.
Wight's new cookbook, Dutch Feast, is the result of marrying into a Dutch family and loving food so much herself. She starts us off slowly, with an introduction and a very brief history, and then there is everything you need to know to stock your pantry for the best Dutch cooking. Dried spices like nutmeg, paprika, cumin, curry powder, ginger, and turmeric share space with flavor bomb sauces like fish sauce, mustard, and soy sauce. Almond and vanilla extracts, brandy and gin, and fresh chilies and ginger add even more flavor opportunities, so you never have to worry about a bland meal.
Chapters on Comfort Food, Coffee Time, and Weeknight Dinners offer simple solutions for daily meals, while chapters on Daytime Entertaining and Christmas are filled with ideas, recipes, and inspiration for special occasions. And chapters on genuinely Dutch rituals like Borrels (basically Dutch tapas, or small plates) and Rijsttafel (Rice Table, a feast of Indonesian inspired dishes served with rice) shares a bit of the culture along with the cuisine.
Recipes include (and know that there are so many more than this!) Dutch Eggs in Lettuce, Sugar Bread, Rose Meringues, Applestroop, Bitterballs, Marinated Herring, Braised Meatballs, Fried Trout and Sweet Potato Stamppot, Honey Rice Pudding, Dutch Fries, Dutch Macaroni, Prune Tart, Honey Rice Pudding, and Salted Licorice Ice Cream. Sound interesting?
Honestly, I wasn't at all sure what I'd find in the pages of Dutch Feast, but I ended up finding a new cuisine that sounds like it's right up my alley. It's going to take some cooking and eating to know for sure, but I'm willing to give that a try. Any cuisine that understands the simple comfort of bread is a cuisine I can get behind. And with lots of interesting recipes and gorgeous photos, I think trying out a Dutch Feast will be quite a trip.
