Product Description

GRETTA CURRAN BROWNE has to date been internationally published by six European publishers and also by publishers in Japan and China.

“Fabulous, exotic, engrossing … fresh and authentic in every detail … it has to be the best book I have read about the British in India since M. M. Kaye’s "The Far Pavilions" – Dr Aileen Keegan.

"Another wonderful book by Gretta Curran Browne. She not only captures the times but the emotions of the characters flawlessly." -- Sharon Stark

Not at all what I expected, this delightful book weaves an intricate tale of the young Scots soldier , an intense romance, heartbreak and just a bit of war. In exotic places, in long ago times, I enjoyed every skilfully crafted word. -- Doris S. Sanders

"If authors such as this one could bottle their writing formula and sell it they'd make millions. From the opening pages I was hooked." -- Garth R. Mailman.

A complete stand-alone novel - and also the first in "The Macquarie Series".

Set in the beauty of Scotland, the magic of India, and the hostility of China, peopled with memorable characters of all races, By Eastern Windows is the story of a young British soldier, Lachlan Macquarie, posted to India where he meets Jane Jarvis, a young girl from the Caribbean – beautiful, different and exciting – who becomes the greatest love, and the greatest tragedy, of his life.
It is also the story of the young men who travelled with him, far from home, serving their King in a country they came to love, while coping with the complex differences between East and West.

This the the never-before-told story of Lachlan Macquarie's young life - before he went on to become one of the most important men of his time,

HASH(0x9a0f1d28) out of 5 stars Great Novel about a great man Oct. 31 2012

I'm Australian and Lachlan Macquarie (The Father of Australia) was THE man who had the vision, drive and determination to steer Australia away from it's origins as The Dumping Ground for British Trash (one of whom was an ancestor of mine). The author has beautifully captured Macquarie's spirit in this novel and gives the reader a wonderful insight into Lachlan Macquarie in the days and years before he came to Australia. The book appears to be accurate, is very readable and extremely entertaining.
I have now purchased the follow-on and am looking forward to reading it - I just hope I can put it down when it's time to sleep!!

HASH(0x9a0f1f74) out of 5 stars Fantastic enjoyable story Aug. 31 2012

Another great read from Gretta Curran Browne. Having read all of her books now, I am amazed at how versatile she is. It seems that she specialises in historical fiction, which are all fantastic, but her contemporary novels are brilliant too. They range from a crime caper, to a heartbreaking drama, and also a love story/thriller. She has a great talent, and I would recommend her books to anyone. After suffering through reading the badly written, over-hyped Fifty Shades of Grey, it is a relief to get back to intelligent and skilful writing.

Like Gretta Curran Browne's historical Irish trilogy, By Eastern Windows is also a wonderful, enlightening read. Clearly she has thoroughly researched the period and the life of Lachlan Macquarie, but it doesn't feel like a heavy history lesson, or like some historical fiction, it doesn't make a complete fabrication of actual events for entertainment's sake. Instead it is an enjoyable, interesting read that I raced through, unable to put it down. It tells the story of Lachlan Macquarie's life climbing through the ranks in the British army in the early 1800's taking us from Scotland to India, then to China and back to Scotland. Gretta Curran Browne really makes these places and the characters come to life. Although a soldier's life is not an easy one, there were many moments of humour in the book. It is also a wonderful and poignant love story. This book is really about Macquarie's life before he went to Australia and became a massive part of their history. We see what events shape him and what makes up his character. He's charming, passionate gentleman as well as a strong and loyal leader. I didn't know of Lachlan Macquarie's life or importance before reading this book, other than seeing his name everywhere on a trip to Sydney - there are so many places named in his honour including a bank, a hospital and a university named after him, plus a tourist attraction `Mrs Macquarie's Chair' where his wife used to sit and watch the ships coming into the habour. I wondered why he was so important, and now I can look forward to finding out in the next book, which I'm sure will explain why he became known as `The Father of Australia'.

HASH(0x9a0f1f38) out of 5 stars Great historical fiction June 21 2013

What was it like to be a British soldier from Scotland in the early 19th century? Lachlan Macquarie has come home from the war of rebellion in America. He left a boy and returned a man. But he has a mother and brother to support, so he ships off to India. There he encounters all kinds of adventures and we the reader get a glimpse into the world of the British Colonists. Social status and making money are even more important, because it's a colonists ticket to recognition and status back home. The characters and the events in the book were compelling. I didn't want it to put the book down and I didn't want it to end. Thank heaven there is another book in the series so we can follow the accomplishments of Lachlan Macquarie and his adopted son George Jarvis.

Getting to know this man was an honour. I do love historical novels. His character was being built through the loves and tragedy he experienced in India and China. Great tasks were set for him, which he brilliantly completed and was rewarded for them, giving him the respect and love by all that served under him as well as those he served.
