Four years and four cities later, Metric's Emily Haines is finally (almost) ready to release her debut solo effort. On September 26, Last Gang Records will release Knives Don't Have Your Back, which was written and recorded in Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, and New York over the last four years, and features contributors including Sparklehorse's Scott Minor, Broken Social Scene's Justin Peroff, Stars' Evan Cranley, and Metric's Jimmy Shaw. Though it took Haines four years to complete the album, the singer says she'd been plotting this for years. Among those songs are a track that was written while Haines was studying electroacoustics in Montreal, while some were recorded in Toronto in the winter of 2002, shortly after the death of Haines' father. According to the label, the album is intimate and mellow, featuring piano-driven tracks with string and horn arrangements.

Apart from this fairly evidend drawback, "Knives Don't Have Your Back" has some points of interest, including "Our Hell," "The Maid Needs a Maid", and "Winning" - oddly which are positioned at the beginning, middle, and end of the album.
Overall, a nice companion to anyone's Metric album collection - Haines demostrates a talent that will most likely become more developed with time.
Standout tracks are the edgy Doctor Blind, introspective Our Hell, melancholy Maid needs a Maid and inspirational Winning. There is alot of piano used throughout and can be a little repetitive at times, but suit the lyrics. All the songs lack the synth and strong guitar riffs of Metric, but that doesn't make it bad. People who like Elliott Smith, Cat Power or Fiona Apple and similar sounding artists will really like this.
honestly, it took me awhile to get into it. it isn't the type of CD you can pop into your car player and groove down the highway with.
it has become, however, one of my fave discs to listen to while reading or doing homework. the songs grow on you. among my faves are: "our hell", "doctor blind", "crowd surf off a cliff", "detective daughter", and "the maid needs a maid".
in a night i have been known to put this CD on repeat. it is NOT to be missed. but it may need repeated listening. keep that in mind.
4 stars out of 5!!!
Am I the only one with this small but never the less mistake?
Though "Knives Dont Have Your Back" has to be one the decades most profound and beautiful records.
I am still hoping for a follow-up.

... and was bored to tears. If you want to listen to Metric, go listen to Metric and avoid this album. Emily self indulges in her desired little ditties. Read morePublished on Oct. 5 2006 by P. Gvildys
