Dax Jamison is a troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks. In foster care since he was just a boy, he’s been bounced from home to home until he finally winds up in Darling, California. It’s there that things start to change for the better. When Trisha Wagner, one of the rich kids, sticks up for Dax, he can’t believe his luck. Dax has a chance to make something of himself—to rise above his unfortunate circumstances--but his cards may fall in a different direction. He loves Trish, but she seems destined for the kind of life Dax doesn’t fit into. What is Dax’s destiny? This prequel to best selling MC romance novel, Satin and Steel, reveals how a tough kid who needs a family ends up becoming the vice president of one of the strongest motorcycle clubs on the west coast—The Phantoms.

Earning the Cut: Excerpt

Hungry. That was the first sensation he could recall feeling. He was always hungry. Even when his stomach was full of whatever crap happened to be lying around after they were through, he was still hungry. As if he were a dog, they only threw him the scraps. He was a half-starved afterthought. Just something to be tolerated. Even though he was young, he was old enough to understand that he was meaningless to them. Opening the fridge revealed a half-eaten pizza. He gnawed at it. It was cold and it tasted funny. His tummy gurgled a familiar warning so he stopped eating. Sometimes the stomachache that followed eating the funny food was worse than the hunger pains. Tired, he slumped down on the couch to wait for Mommy.
***
Laughter met his ears but it wasn’t funny. The room spun around and around. It wasn’t like when you twirled in circles. It was worse than that time on the merry-go-round. But, the dizziness passed once they got off the ride. This was much worse. The bad feeling wouldn’t go away. He felt sick, oh so sick. He threw up on the old brown couch. Mommy was there. He thought she would be mad at him, but to his surprise, she was mad at the man instead. She yelled and he covered his ears. It was hard to tell if she was mad at him, too. She was always mad.

“You gave him beer? He’s only six!”

The man laughed again.

“That’s the last time I leave you alone with him, Trey!”

HASH(0xa0e7209c) out of 5 stars Dax fans will not be disappointed! April 6 2013
By Onyx Hikari (Margarita) - Published on Amazon.com

"No bird flies a straight line, but I've landed here, and here is where I'm gonna stay. I'm gonna live this life right. Never forget where I came from. That's all I can do. That's what earning this cut means to me." - Dax Earning the Cut

If you have read Satin and Steel, it may have crossed your mind on the how's and why's in Dax's life. Well this novella will helpfully help you understand the beautifully conflicted hot alpha male and the way his mind somewhat works. For those who had issues with Satin and Steel being closely influenced by SoA (Sons of Anarchy), hopefully this novella will put it in a different light. While the beginning is a tad slow, it is worth the whole read to get to the end. The story is told entirely from Dax's point of view.

From the beginning I have to say that it's a little slow. There is a reason for this, and the reason is important. The beginning is told from a small child's point of view. Keeping this in mind is important because when you are small, descriptive abilities and words are very limited. Dax's childhood isn't anything less than heartbreaking. To see what he went through is hard to take, especially if you are a mother. There were times I wanted to reach through the book and jack slap his mother.

As we move onto his teenage years and see how he views the world after growing up in the system. We also see how his love for Trish started and how it tentatively ended. Also while I disliked Trish in SS I have to say it may have helped my opinion of her, but didn't totally alleviate the irritation I have with her for both her assumptions and expectations of Dax. You will either love or hate the relationship, but it is the type of young love that is almost destined for the end it received. I have to say that this seriously evoked some emotion from me, as I couldn't agree with the decisions made by Trish in the end, although I understood the reasons behind it.

When Dax joined the Phantoms and the feelings and longing behind it was interesting and touching. The way he earned his cut was pure heartbreak. It's hard to describe the interactions without giving to much away, as it is with most of this book. Again I will state that this is worth the read. It will separate in your mind SoA and SS. The relationships in Dax's personal life are so different than those in SoA, it's like apples and oranges. All in all it's a good standalone read that will compel you to read Satin and Steel if you haven't already. After reading it, I reread SS just because it evoked that emotion in me. You can see where Dax would be conflicted about what his place is due to his upbringing, but that's in the next story (and why you should get it).

All in all I give this novella 4.5 bookmarks. Read it, you'll love it.

*I was given an ARC for an honest and true review. But I bought it too. ;)*

HASH(0xa0e722e8) out of 5 stars Jayna Does It Again! April 6 2013
By Florida Feline - Published on Amazon.com

I fell in love with Dax Jamison in "Satin and Steel". You will love him even more after reading this prequel. Jayna tells us Dax's story before he became a member of The Phantoms and how he met Trish. He had a troubled childhood and it will tug at your heartstrings. He eventually finds a family in his motorcycle club. You will get lost in Dax's story and will want more. Read "Satin and Steel" if you haven't already and mark your calendar for this summer for "Leather and Sand", the continuation of Dax and Rhee's story. If you are an SOA fan, these stories are inspired by the show and a must read. Jayna is a very talented author and very loyal to her Foxxx Club and her readers. I enjoy chatting with her on Twitter and Facebook. She's an amazing lady and inspiration, as well.

Earning the Cut, shows (heartbreaking at times) the events that lead up to Dax becoming the man he is (in S&S). And if possible make ya fall in love with with him even more.

SYNOPSIS~
(From Goodreads)
Earning the Cut (Riding The Line 0.5)
This prequel to Satin and Steel is told from Dax's perspective. Earning the Cut reveals intimate details about Dax's past, including his rough childhood, his relationship with Trish, and of course, how he became the tough, alpha male vice president of The Phantoms motorcycle club. Just like Satin and Steel, this work is loosely inspired in part by the hit television show, Sons of Anarchy. While characters may appear similar to characters on the show, this is original work that does not infringe upon any copyright.
So, if you like tall, muscled, tattooed bikers and want to know how one troubled boy transcended his past to achieve status in an outlaw motorcycle crew, check out Earning the Cut!
This approximately 30,000 word novella contains elements of abuse, first time sex, and violence.

Satin and Steel (Riding The Line #1)
All Rhiannon Blake wanted was to find her little sister, Mickey. The last thing she expected when she walked into the seedy biker bar was to be assaulted. Luckily, Dax Jamison, the tall, muscled, vice president of The Phantoms motorcycle crew rescues her. At first, the innocent college girl clashes with the dominant biker. Then, a slow fire begins to burn between them, culminating in a fiery explosion of sex, drugs, and passion.
At first, Rhiannon is more than a little afraid of the sexy, tattooed biker. He’s arrogant, domineering, and dangerous. When her apartment is ransacked, Dax insists that The Phantoms provide protection for Rhiannon until he can figure out why she is being targeted by a rival crew. When an escaped drug cartel boss joins the mix, things start to get complicated. Loosely based on the hit television show, Sons of Anarchy, this work combines a strong plot with a scorching tale of danger, intrigue and romance.
Jayna Vixen is a popular online erotica author. Satin and Steel is her first published work. Keep an eye out for the sequel, Leather and Sand, due out in 2013.

Leather and Sand (Riding The Line #2)
What happens when Rhiannon Blake and Dax Jamison, the ultra-sexy, alpha male vice president of the Phantoms motorcycle club cross paths once more? Find out in this highly anticipated sequel to the popular motorcycle romance drama, Satin and Steel.
All Rhiannon Blake wanted was to find her little sister, Mickey. Meeting Dax Jamison led to emotional havoc and a secret that left Rhee scared and confused. She did the only thing she could think of: she ran. Rhiannon figured that leaving was the best solution for both she and Dax. Little did she know, her disappearance affected Dax more deeply then she could have imagined. When he finds her again...he's not exactly pleased when he discovers Rhiannon's little secret.

MY THOUGHTS~
I chose to purchase and read this series because I absolutely love biker romance! I liked the idea of a prequel that was out by the time I started the series so I could read it first.
I chose to review this as a series review rather than three individual reviews, because I read the entire series straight through. All the books flowed very well together and transitioned from one to the next very smoothly. I'm not sure it would do the individual books justice if I attempted to review them separately at this point. Had I been able to put them down in between books rather than jump right into the next, separate reviews may have been a possibility! Kudos to Jayna Vixen for drawing me in and hooking me all the way through to the end!
I thoroughly enjoyed this series from the prequel all the way through to the end of book two. It was captivating. The story line was unique in itself rather than the same old tired romance. I think that's part of what draws me to biker "romance". This author has a gift for creating unique situations.
I have nothing negative or even critical to add to this review. I was extremely impressed with this series. I can't wait for more!
