I adore this series, and it just keeps getting better and better. Sarah narrates with her trademark snark, and even though you'll giggle, you'll cringe too, because Ms. Petersen lets the dark humor fly, and the story is tempered with moments of levity that will definitely bring you down to earth. This kind of writing is hard to do, weaving humor into admittedly horrid situations, but the author manages with a sure hand and never lets the pacing falter. There are a few twists in this one that left me smiling and the ending leaves off with plenty of material for lots more fun with this kick-ass couple. Do they find the "wall"? Does Sarah reunite with her family? And just what is wrong with David? You'll get your questions answered in this one, I promise, and trust me, you won't want to put it down!
I have been dying to read this next installment of one of my favorite horror series's, and I have to say I was very pleased!! My favorite still-together (why are there not more of those in fiction?) couple is back with another huge adventure on their hands. I love the relationship between Sarah and David. They truly are my hero couple and I always get nervous when things (zombies, other cute men/women, zombie escape routes involving splitting up) threaten to tear them apart.
I liked how Petersen developed the cure senario with David. He was cured but subtle differences in his behavior suggested he became some sort of zombie/super human hybrid. And Sarah found tooth and nail to keep her once nerd, now buff husband by her side.
The other main characters, Nicole and McCray were annoying at first (probably because I thought they were going to get Sarah and David killed) but they grew on me as the book wore on. A big theme in this book was secrets. Sarah kept the cure a secret, and as I slowly learned more about Nicole and McCray I knew that all kept secrets would blow up in the characters faces at some point.
One thing (of many) that I love about this series is that there are multiple layers to each book. The overall one being to survive, but I love how Petersen makes little adventures and journeys (physically and mentally) for her characters. It really makes this series enjoyable to read. Definitely pick this one up!
A friend loaned me this book and I started it without realizing that it was the third book in the series. The fact that I had not read the first two books did not interfere with my enjoyment of the third, but I did immediately order book 1 from Amazon and have the second and fourth (last?) books on my Wish List.
If you like books about zombies and appreciate a heroine who is always ready with a quip or sarcastic remark, I recommend this book - although I kind of wish I had started with the first one and read them in order.
Since the Zombie Apocalypse went down, there have been rumors about the Midwest Wall (WIN... that means I'm safe!!!) Sarah and David are slowly making their way toward the Wall, with the zombie cure- hoping that it actually exists!
In route to the Wall, they happen across Nicole Nessing (a TV star from before) running from a pack of zombies. After checking to make sure she hadn't been bitten, Sarah doesn't like the way Dave is practically DROOLING all over her and contemplates throwing her back... Only for a minute though.
They get BACK on the road, heavy one blonde, pre-zombie apocalypse TV star and they are immediately bombarded by trucks, inhabited by freaks racing toward them demanding they come to their "camp", because "This here road is our territory." type stuff. They have no choice...
"Unfortunately, I felt like we were lambs going to a slaughter, not about to frolic in a field or something." -Sarah
The leader of this 'town' (ahem... cult) decided as punishment for trespassing on their road- Dave has to go into 'The Pit' or...you know an in-ground freaking swimming pool filled will 30 zombies! Sarah and Nicole get to go free in order to spread the word to everyone else NOT TO COME NEAR THEIR TOWN. Dude- duh! Make a freaking sign you psycho!
"All's fair in love and zombies." -Sarah
Okay... so now this is the tricky part. Too many details/not enough... spoilers... UGH! Here we go! I'm opting for vagueness, because I HATE to spoil this book! It was SO AMAZING!
Does Dave make it through the Zombie Pit of Death??? I'll NEVER tell... But, Sarah finally tells Nicole about the cure that she's got hiding under her shirt... just in case and they pick up ANOTHER stow away ex-rockstar guy!
They make it to the famous Midwest Wall, which is actually a HUGE fence, surrounded by heavily armed guards, topped with razor sharp wire and oh- surrounded by a horde of zombies bigger than they've ever seen before. I know.
This book is a ROLLER-COASTER ride of crazy zombie AWESOME. Seriously, I was constantly GASPING for breathe, doing the whole "Oh my god! Oh my God! Oh my God!" thing the ENTIRE time. I'm telling you- I love this series more and more with each and every book!
This is the third book in the Living with the Dead series that follows Sarah and David. The first book works out their relationship problems through zombie slayage. The second features their successful zombie killing business (plus some more relationship problems). The third is harder to classify and much less comedic than its predecessors. Eat Slay Love is the best book in the series so far. The complaints that I had about the zombies either having emotion or physical feelings are finally fixed in this book. No zombies running away in fear or flinching at super important moments that save a major character from a big bite. Our characters are in real danger throughout the novel and the intensity doesn't let up. Sarah and David are constantly fighting for their lives through zombies and crazy rednecks bend on making an example out of them for other outsiders. The best thing is that it evolves from silly fluff to more serious, sustainable dystopic plots.
Sarah and David are always a joy to read about. Their ability to find humor in just about every situation is fun and even brings this more emotional installment of the series much needed levity. The new characters are much better than the previous books' minor characters. Nicole, the stalkerazzi, was initially very annoying and kind of creepy, but as the story went on, her intelligence and real personality came through. She isn't just a creepy reporter that would do anything to get ahead or get a story, but proves to be a real friend to Sarah and David McCray, the drugged out musician, also proves to be more than just an inconvenient hindrance. I loved these characters and can't wait to see more from them.
The only criticism I have is the ending of the book. I had to finish it because I was so engaged in the story, but the ending threw off the momentum a bit. There is a huge reveal near the end and I feel it would have been more effective to stop there and continue the story in the next book. I still very much enjoyed this novel and I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in the series.
