The sound quality is great. Some people have complained of "not enough bass", but unless you want your innards jostling around from vibrations every second of playback, this is perfect! Deep bass, rich sounds, and it definitely fills up a room, easily. The sound quality is great, and vocals in music come out sounding crisp and clear.
Setting up my Echo Plus was very simple, intuitive, and easy - it only took about 2 minutes. Adding my Philips Hue bulb that came bundled with it and connecting the two took even less time - about 3 seconds! You just tell Alexa to "find smart devices", she locates it, turns it on/off, and you name it, control it, and put your phone down.
I'm loving my Echo Plus, and the Smart Home Hub is a great addition. The price was a little high, but, considering I don't have to go out and buy a Philips Hue Hub, or some other company's device, means that for me, it's a great investment for future updates, technologies, and hardware to come.
EDIT: I just paired a smart plug with my Echo Plus so that now I can turn on/off alternate devices in my room. It's easy to setup, and so handy!
Purchased the Echo Plus because I decided to get into the Philips Hue ecosystem, and saw that the Plus came with a free bulb. However, what they don't tell you, is that the hub built into the Echo Plus can currently only control power and dimming. If you purchase any Hue bulbs that do colour, or different temperatures of white, the Echo cannot directly control any of this - you will still require one of the Hue bridges, which negates the point of the built in smart home hub, in this case. If I'd been aware of this, I probably would have stuck with the regular Echo and just gotten the Hue bridge - now I have both.
The options for music in Canada are also severely limited right now. You have the option of Amazon's streaming music service, which seems to still have limited selection (I've asked it to "play drum and bass music" several times, and heard the same few songs on many occasions), or Spotify. That's it. No Sirius/XM. No hooks into your computer library through something like iTunes. It also seems to constantly stop playing music after a handful of songs with no explanation, despite having a robust internet connection and home network.
"Skills" selection in general is still pretty limited. A couple of Canadian banks have Alexa functionality, but several major ones still don't. You can get news and weather updates. Aside from that, and the various other smart home device skills Alexa supports, there's not much of interest yet. I assume this will improve, as companies migrate stuff over for Canada.
Alexa is good at recognizing what you are saying without much fuss. Only had a straight up failure a few times. I can raise my voice from another floor of my home, and Alexa will still recognize what I am saying. Voice recognition while there's lots of background noise is spotty, but better than you might expect.
The "routines" you can create are extremely useful. I can simply say "Alexa, good night" to turn off all of the lights in my home, and turn on the light next to my bed. Pretty much anything Alexa can do, can be put into a routine.
This review might makes me sound negative on the Echo overall, but I'm not. It's a great convenience, and a neat piece of tech. I'm hopeful that it will be even better, once the Canadian version catches up to it's American cohort. But it's important to have your eyes wide open, as to what this device can - and can't - do. Particularly if you're buying the Echo Plus for the "hub". Hence the three star review, for now.
So here's a pro tip to all the people looking to get the real Alexa skills and ignore the Cancon garbage: Create an Amazon.com (not .ca - .com) and when you register your echo, use your .com login instead of your .ca one. Voila! Suddenly you get all the American skills available, PLUS you get the real Alexa voice (US English) that sounds a thousand times better.
Be sure to ensure that your language settings are set to US English instead of Canadian English to get this.
Hopefully Amazon will stop delineating US from Canadian English. We don't sound that different folks...not enough to warrant the crap Alexa you have for a supposed Canadian.
After owning it for one month [as well as echo and echo dot], I find that one has to often shout at them and they frequently do NOT listen to the commands when other times the commands are just fine. I think that Amazon Echo needs a little work on their voice recognition software.
After owning it for 2 months, I've reduced the star rating to 2. She is so very moody .... some days she doesn't understand the most basic of queries; on other days there is no problem at all. She is still fun to mess around with though.
The blue tooth connection is quite "finicky' to say the least. Each time I use it, it's a chore to get it connected.
