1. In my opinion (I have used all Echo devices), this has the best sound quality. I used this as my desktop speaker for many months until getting a dedicated sound system. This also works very well with smart TVs. The good thing is that this is not spatial or surround but fills the room nicely with clear mids and heavy bass.
2. The device integrates very well with other smart devices in my house. It shows the door cam effortlessly when someone is at the door (it only works with the Ring doorbell!). It also shows the door in the inset if you watched any video on the screen!
3. The display quality is good for the purpose—nothing magical here, but nothing wrong.
4. The 8" is a good size and probably the minimum to go with if you want them to be helpful on the kitchen countertop or desktop. I keep mine on my desktop on the second floor. So, if someone is at the door, I can see them within 2~3 seconds and react quickly (talk to them or open the door).
5. The aesthetic is great; it fits nicely with the existing room decor and ambience. If anything, it makes the room look better!
The Bad:
1. The worst part of my experience with this device is its voice recognition; the microphones are placed inconveniently at the top. Due to the angle the device sits at, they don't receive voice commands as efficiently as the dots (3rd and later gens). As a result, I have to scream sometimes (in a quiet room) to get its attention.
Depending on the placement (more below), the device may not listen to your voice from a 1-foot distance!!!
However, if you know some acoustics, you can make it work by placing it where the surrounding walls can reflect some of the sounds toward the mics. I have shown one such area in the picture. With proper positioning, the voice can be captured more efficiently. But the voice command is never as good as on the Echo Dots!
2. The touch responsiveness is average; it is a little laggy and sometimes feels like the ATM at the bank (you touch it, and then it responds with a short delay!)
3. My Echo show 5 and 8 used to detect motions, and now they no longer do that! I believe Amazon has removed the options and left them only in some of their preferred devices. I called the Amazon reps, who could not answer my queries satisfactorily! So, now many of my routines don't work anymore! Shame!
4. I stopped using the Echo as a desktop speaker because whenever I start the computer, it shouts "Now Connected to Lutful's Desktop.....". It scares the hell out when you are unready to hear anything as loud in the middle of a quiet morning. I have tried many tips and tricks to change this, with no luck!
5. The processors on these devices are weak. Amazon makes these devices to push their software; they don't pay as much attention to the hardware quality. This is evident in everyday experience.
Recommend?
100% of the time. I am a big fan of the Amazon ecosystem and enjoy building my smart home using Amazon products. In my opinion, Amazon has the most versatile and practical home automation than the rest of the competition. I am an Apple user, but I don't like their home automation for its reach and high price tags. If you are living and creating an Amazon ecosystem just like me, you will definitely enjoy having a "show" by your side.

Part 1: Which Echo Show to Buy?
If you’re like me you’re trying to decide “Which Echo Show” Smart speaker to get. I have both the Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8 and like them both but for different reasons.
Echo Show 5:
The Echo Show 5 is small and compact and works BEST as a SMART ALARM CLOCK.
It’s small foot print and screen fits anywhere, kitchen, bedroom, office … The Show 5 speaker sounds good in smaller rooms and the touch screen adds functionality and works great for watching short videos.
Echo Show 8:
The Echo Show 8 is bigger in every way. The screen is 45% than the Echo Show 5, it has two bigger, stereo speakers instead of one, a more powerful stereo amplifier and four microphones instead of two. The larger screen on the Echo Show 8 is much better for watching videos and viewing security cameras.
If the main purpose you want a Video Smart Speaker is to Watch Streaming Video, Video Calling and Ring Security Cameras then I highly recommend the Echo Show 8. The Echo Show 8 also has stereo speakers and a more powerful amplifier so it sounds better and can fill larger rooms with good sound.
If you have limited space and want a Video Smart Speaker to use primarily as a SMART Alarm Clock, with the ability to display the weather information, check security cameras, and watch streaming video for short periods of time then get the Echo Show 5.
The Clock display is the same on the Show 5 and Show 8, even though the Show 8 has a larger screen.
The Echo Show 5 and Show 8 are both good Video Smart Speakers it all comes down to what you want a Video Smart Speaker for and How you’re planing on using it.
In my house we have an Echo Show 5 in the Bedroom to use as SMART Alarm Clock and an Echo Show 8 in the office and kitchen. Our daughter likes the Echo Show 8 to for here kids bedrooms because of the larger screen for streaming video.
I highly recommend either the Echo Show 5 or 8 Video Speaker Speakers if you want a Smart Speaker for Video, Music and Home Automation. If you’re primary purpose for a smart speaker is music only, then the new Echo 3rd Gen is the Best Sounding Echo Smart Speaker for Music without a Video Screen.
Here are More Details and Comparisons between the Show 8 and Show 5 …
Size:
First off everything about the Echo Show 8 is Bigger. It’s two inches taller, two inches wider and the Screen is 45% larger than the Echo Show 5. Overall the Echo Show 8 is noticeably larger than the Show 5 and takes up more space on the night table, kitchen counter or desk.
Resolution:
With the larger screen size comes higher resolution. The Show 8 has the same resolution as the 10.1 inch Echo Show 1280x800. The resolution on the Echo Show 5 is 960x480.
Both the larger Echo Show 10.1 and Show 8 have the same 1280x800 screen resolution. The Screen looks clearer and brighter on the Show 8 compared to the Show 10.1.
The Show 5 has a lower screen resolution (960x480) however it actually has a higher pixel count thanks to the smaller screen size. The picture on the Show 5 is also very good … especially when you consider the price.
When it comes to resolution I would choose the Show 8 over the Echo Show 10.1. The screen looks clearers the Show 8 vs the Show 10. I don’t have a preference when comparing the Show 8 to Show 5. Both screens look good from a resolution standpoint although the Show 8 screen is much larger.
Microphones:
The Echo Show 8 has four microphones while the Echo Show 5 has only two microphones. Both Show 8 and Show 5 work good at recognizing your voice however the Show 8 does work better in noisy rooms or from further distances than the Show 5 thanks for the extra microphones.
TouchScreen:
I find the touchscreens on both the Show 8 and Show 5 to be responsive. The touchscreen on the Show 8 slightly easier to navigate and control thanks to the larger screen.
As I said in part one: Both Echo Show 5 and Show 8 are excellent Video Smart Speakers … it all comes down to what you’re going to be using them for.
