This review focuses on analyzing the changes to come with the Special Edition, however the game itself won't be described in detail. Skyrim has come to be known as a most open RPG experience. Exploration elements and skill systems exist in other games of the genre, but Skyrim stretches the scale of those to create a massive world. Although it has a large size, it is by no means boring. Even coming back into Skyrim with the Special Edition, I was hooked in for a significant length of time, albeit familiar with all of the elements the game has to offer. Skyrim largely remains unchanged, and some features are disappointing to have been skipped out on.
While the improved edition noticeably improves a lot of detail in the graphics, other elements remain untouched. The game still presents jagged edges, especially on its characters, indicating its age more than it would like to. Animations don't look hideous, but they are a far cry from smooth. I appreciated the new details in the environments though, with much sharper looking objects and water effects. However, the game's improvements quickly stop past the graphical changes, even lacking any sort of meaningful developer commentary. As a new experience, Skyrim Special Edition is a great platform, however at its full price tag, it won't offer any meaningful value to returning fans. A PC version with mods is still a far better experience overall, although the consoles try to replicate the experience somewhat. Albeit the mods can be installed to improve the game experience, those are significantly limited in execution. Both consoles feature size cap on the mods installed, especially the PS4's 1GB allocation size. Thus, many mods released over the game's life don't find their way to be compatible with this release, and sadly no further improvement can be made to graphics.
Skyrim Special Edition is overall a divisive game: on the one hand, it opens the in-depth exploration RPG experience to the new crowd, with lots of available improvements, however the game's full launch price tag often highlights the absence of desired features. As an improved "remaster", the game simply has little change to offer. Improved graphics are much appreciated, with higher detail and longer draw distances, however animations and character models remain jagged at times. Other than that, the game lacks any extra developer content and its performance is severely lacking. 30 fps for a 2011 game remaster is borderline unacceptable. But the whole experience remains great, albeit one will get more enjoyment out of it as a new comer. For fans of the game, full asking price may be a little too steep. Skyrim is just as enjoyable as before, and even more so, however I would caution against paying $80 for it.
Great game. The graphics are cool coming form a 360 user.
