From the Back Cover

The Envy Chronicles continue as New York Times bestselling author Colleen Gleason (writing as Joss Ware) delivers the compelling tale of a dark, ravaged world …

Simon Japp will never forget his violent past. But when civilization is all but destroyed, he sees his chance for redemption. He's determined to help the resistance against the Strangers, the mysterious force that stalks them at every turn. He can't afford to get distracted, even by the stunning, soft-spoken woman fighting by his side.

Sage Corrigan sees something good in Simon, even if he can't see it in himself. Posing as lovers to infiltrate a group key to their fight, they find that their staged affection soon develops into a desire that will leave them fighting for their lives.

HASH(0xa8e47378) out of 5 stars Much better than the first. Great, steamy love story. Feb. 13 2011
By Jen (Red Hot Books) - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
What a difference one book can make! After lukewarm feelings for Beyond the Night, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book... especially since the lead character, Simon, didn't really spark much interest for me. But I'm really glad I did. Unlike the first installment in the Envy Chronicles, I felt real emotion for the characters --a connection I just didn't have the first time around.

The concept for the series: the world is 50 years past a near-apocalypse. Many of the survivors are living in what was once Las Vegas, NV, which is now called N-V or Envy. Creeping around at night are killer zombies called gangas... and pulling their strings are the nefarious Strangers, people who were once human, now made immortal by implanting special crystals in their bodies. It is likely they were behind the "Change" that sent the Earth into near ruin. Five men from 2010 now find themselves in this new world. They had gone exploring in an AZ cave and went into a kind of stasis for 50 years, awaking only 6 months before the events of the story. They had not aged, but instead came out stronger, each with a unique ability.

Simon was a crime lord's bodyguard in his old life. But he sees the Change as a chance to become a new man. He is attracted to Sage, a quiet computer whiz and member of the Resistance, trying to bring down the Strangers. But he thinks she is in a relationship with another man, so he refuses to pursue his feelings. Sage is something of an outcast in Envy, because she comes from a settlement that's like a breeding camp. She and Simon end up teaming up to infiltrate her old town to learn more about one of the leaders of the Strangers. While they're there, it gets harder and harder to fight their growing attraction.

I really liked Simon. He's one of those men with a dark past and hopelessness about the future --but deep down he is a really good guy, worthy of love. I loved watching him fall in love with Sage and each time they get closer to acting on their feelings, the story gets hotter and hotter. This was a huge improvement over the last book and I'm sorry to see it end. Here's hoping the next book will be as good! 4 1/2 stars.

HASH(0xa8a67b40) out of 5 stars terrific urban fantasy Feb. 12 2010
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Although the world is not what he remembers having undergone the change five decades ago when he and friends (Dr. Elliot, Quint, Wyatt, and Fence) were trapped in a cave near Sedona without aging, Simon Japp still feels guilty for what he did back then. Still he and his buddies struggle to adjust as they battle the evil Strangers and the deadly Ganga. Elliot having found Jade (see Beyond the Night) is doing the best in their new compound Envy once called Vegas.

Sage Corrigan was born after the "change," but like Simon has a nasty past that haunts her. To survive she and her cohorts at Envy need information on their enemy the Cult of Atlantis and the mysterious Remington Truth. What they know leads to Falling Creek, the last place Sage wants to return to; but she knows she is only one who can get inside along with her pretend husband Simon.

The setting in Awakening Heroes makes the tale as the futuristic world of Ware feels genuine with references back to the old world and the mysterious malevolent Strangers and the Ganga enhance that eerie feeling. Through the flawed lead couple, readers learn more about the post apocalyptic America. Simon and Sage are a wonderful pairing as their respective past psychologically intrudes on the mission and on a future together. Joss Ware is two for two with this terrific urban fantasy.

HASH(0xb36ca264) out of 5 stars Stayed up all night to finish reading! May 20 2015
By Jacque - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
No sooner did I finished the first book in the Envy Chronicles then I immediately dove into Embrace the Night Eternal. It’s just as exciting, if not more than, the first book. Book one was all about ‘OMG what happened!’ for the five guys from the past. Book two feels like a aftershock. How did we get here and how we survive? The who/what’s/why’s are keeping me up all night reading.

Simon and Sage. Why am I not surprised they end up together. They both have pasts they would rather forget. Both assured in their skills but neither are exactly able to fit into the lives they find themselves living. Yes these two go together like peas and carrots. Their romance is a entertaining one for me. Watching things unfold between them is sweet at times and at others I found frustratingly funny. And when they pose as a married couple to try to find info to help the Resistance, you just knew things were going to get interesting. A note on the romance, or lack of thereof, I see some people griping about in other reviews. This is a rough, sometimes violent new world. If you honestly think sexy, steamy romance would be dripping off the pages, then you’re crazy. This is a world where people are trying to survive and I can’t help but feel Ms. Ware has hit the right amount of romance in this post-apocalyptic story.

Here’s what I’m truly enjoying about the series; everything is still a mystery. Joss Ware has created this amazing world and instead of spelling everything out right away, you get to experience it with the five guys from the past. It’s so easy to feel their shock and surprise as each piece of the new civilization they find themselves in is exposed for what it once was. Envy – NV – New Vegas – Las Vegas. As in life, there are no clear simple answers here. As one layer of the story is exposed, there are still more unanswered questions. The allure of the mystery, the unknowing and the surviving will keep me coming back for each book in this series. I really don’t mind that I’m still kept guessing at the end of each book. I don’t feel like I have a lingering cliffhanger hangover instead I’m excited to discover what happens next. Maybe it’s because I live in Cali and I’ve had hanging over my head all my life the ‘Big One’ can happen at any time. Is this what survival will be like after? Would I make it in this new world? Although, it seems to be a moot point since California has fallen off the face of the earth and is now below the Pacific Ocean.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

HASH(0xb3842f84) out of 5 stars OMG, Brilliant Book! Aug. 24 2011

My Review:
Simon was the odd-man-out from the group of men that emerged from that cave in Sedona after 50 years. He was not part of the hiking group. No, he had gone in there to die. Simon was a bodyguard to a mafia crime boss, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and completely disgusted with where his life had led him. He was being chased by henchmen when he stumbled into the cave and had accepted that he was going to fact, was ready for it. When he woke up 50 years later, he decided that this was his chance at a new beginning. No one from this group knows about his past and he is determined to make up for all the bad that he has done.

I didn't realize until I got to reflecting on this book for my review, but there is something really different about these books that I really like. While the books do change POV's between both the hero and heroine, you definitely get a LOT more into the psyche of the heroes. I love that!!!

Simon is infatuated/intrigued with Sage, but so is Theo, and Simon has a personal rule not to tread on another man's property, so as far as he is concerned, Sage is completely off-limits. That becomes much more difficult to maintain when he is suddenly posing as her husband in a commune that believes it is their responsibility to re-populate the world. Even if there were not the barrier of Theo in the relationship, Simon knows that he is not good enough for Sage. He has blood on his hands... a lot of it and, regardless of who he is today, nothing changes that fact.

I loved Simon's character. Regardless of his past, he is a good man who is trying to make up for his past sins. His sense of integrity and honor is so incredibly high. He has a very strong and rigid self-discipline which tells you just how hard his life has been up to now. He wants Sage with an ache that is palpable, but he refuses to give in. He gave his word to Theo that he would keep her safe and whole and he fully plans to do that.

Sage is an interesting character. She's an innocent that has grown up in a really different world. I found it funny about how perplexed she became with Theo's advances because she truly thinks of him as a brother. That doesn't mean that she is dismissive of his attention because she definitely is not...she's just not quite sure what to do with it. What she does know is that Simon's kisses affect her in a totally different way than Theo's do.

This was another fabulous installment in this series. Simon & Sage together are so explosive. The climatic scene between the two of them was nothing short of beautiful. There were several times throughout this book where I was gasping and dh was laughing about how I was reacting to the twists/turns of the story/suspense...that's when you know it's good! ;o)

HASH(0xa89bff6c) out of 5 stars Embrace the Night Eternal-A Joyfully Recommended Read April 11 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
One of the five men who come out of a cave in Sedona to find that the world has changed forever, Simon Japp knows that the past can't stay buried. He hates the memories he carries around and keeps himself away from relationships, thinking people will learn about him and not be able to forgive him.

He and his friends are in Envy, the former Las Vegas, a town that is slowly rebuilding after the near destruction of the world. The group has come out of the cave with special abilities, and Simon isn't sure how to handle his at first, but as time goes on he's thrilled to have it.

Sage Corrigan enjoys her life in Envy. She enjoys her work on computers and loves the people she works with. She's worked hard to stay away from Falling Creek, the polygamist community where she was raised. In Envy she can work, enjoy the books she loves to read, and keep herself from becoming involved in a relationship.

Life in the post-apocalyptic world is not always enviable. There are the Strangers to deal with, along with the gangas. And now, the group from Envy is after Remmington Truth, the man the gangas are after as well. When a clue to Truth's whereabouts leads to Falling Creek, Sage and Simon agree to go undercover as man and wife, to see what they can find out.

Can these two fight their growing attraction for each other while they hunt for Truth?

The Envy Chronicles continue with Embrace the Night Eternal, and readers will devour it and want more. Ms. Ware has created a world that is dark and engaging. The characters feel as if they are old friends, and watching them together is a treat.

Simon's flawed past makes him all the more engaging as a character. He wants to give in to his feelings for Sage, but thinks that he will bring her nothing but trouble. The way they interact makes them very real, and I felt every emotion that they did.

Embrace the Night Eternal is a wonderful book that weaves a tale in a destroyed world that should not be entertaining, but is. This second book was as good, if not better, than the first, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
